Damien and his kind got sick of playing human. They were stronger, smarter and more much more powerful. They belonged on top of the command chain. After years of planning they took over the world with fury and those who didn't submit, ending up like the man in his hands. Damien held the man by his throat, ready to teach him to be submissive the hard way. He was the leader, the alpha of his pack.
“Don’t ever stare a werewolf in the eyes.” He spat his warning for the small group of human prisoners that were forming around them to hear. His hand tightened around his neck and man’s lips began to turn a shade of blue, his eyes rolled back. A hint of a sweet scent that he cherished so much mixed with a sour, sickly, scent of fear filled the room. His intimidating black and gold eyes left the man and focused on the source of the smell, his mate.
“Your wife is awake,” Adrian, his brother and his beta, spoke the obvious. It was a hint for Damien to let the man go.
He caught a glimpse of the fear in his wife’s eyes before she quickly redirected her eyes to the floor. She tried to think back to the ten years they were together, not once did he give any sign to this. He was always cold and unaffectionate, but never this scary and intimidating. Never would she have thought of him as a leader, someone who could take charge and get others to follow him.
He was gone for months after the announcement of his kind. She thought he forgotten her and their kids. She was grateful, his dangerous reputation terrified her. Then earlier that morning he showed up at her bedside, and without words, he stabbed her in the side with a needle, almost instantly putting her to sleep. No human was ever brought to the main village awake, whether it was by drugs or their own hands, the last Damien and his men wanted was for them to know where they were.
The man’s body went limp and his hands fell from Damien’s wrists and hung loosely at his sides. Damien gave the man one last glance, confirming the man indeed fainted and then dropped him to the ground without a care. A smirk crossed his face as he took a step towards his wife, she took an unsteady step back. With every step he took forward, she took another step backwards until she was pinned into a wall with nowhere to go. She didn‘t need to look up to know he was hovering over her. She could feel his breath brushing the top of her hair and his heat radiating off of him and on to her.
A low rumbling inside his chest pushed out a furious snarl from his mouth. “Why are you limping?” Her fear and trembling intensified under his demanding question. Too afraid to answer out loud she offered her neck. She remembered he had printed in the newspapers and announced on the news, that through a werewolf’s bite they could see the truth. He leaned down hesitating at the crook of her neck for a moment, he twisted her around so her back was towards Adrian. Listening to her rapid heartbeat, taking in her awful smell of fear that covered up her normally sweet smell. He took a deep breath and tenderly kissed her neck talking into it while directing his eyes at Adrian, “why is she afraid to tell me what happened?”
He pulled her near him so she wouldn’t see the full strength of his glare over her shoulder. Adrian may have been his brother and second in charge, but when it came to her, none of that mattered. “I nudged her forward and a male prisoner kicked his foot through the bars and hit her in the shin trying to trip her.” He stared his brother in the eyes as long as he could until he dropped them to the floor.
“Jade, is that true?” He asked her even though he saw no signs of lies he wanted to double check before he reacted.
“Yes,” she softly whispered through a crackly voice.
“It’s just a bruise, Damien,” Adrian spoke up stopping Damien’s low growl.
“He hurt her,” he snapped causing Jade to flinch away. Swiftly he picked her up, having nothing to do with her leaving his embrace. “Show me who did it,” he ordered leaving the cell with the unconscious human and his trembling inmates behind him.
