Prehir stood silent for a moment before turning towards her "Why are you looking at me like that?" he questioned.
Getting up she walked towards him "take this" undoing her pendent from around her neck, she took his hand and put the little golden Hathor in it, clasping her hand round his, she enclosed it. He looked at it for a moment, then looked up wide eyed at her.
"I can't take this... your mother gave it to you" he whispered.
"I can give it to whomever I want. It's mine to give. I want the goddess to protect you" pausing she whispered "both of you."
"Then I will give it to my brother" Khepri turned away quickly not knowing why, but that comment made her heart ache and she felt an overwhelming weight in her chest.
"I am the better fighter, my brother will need it more than me" she nodded sitting back down on the bench a slight breeze whispered through the sycamore trees.
"I can't lose either of you" she whispered quietly.
Deciding to change the conversation on other matters she asked.
"Is there any news from court?" she looked up at him as he still stared at the little figure of Hathor, his gaze seemingly distant for a moment. Tearing his eyes from the pendent he looked back at her, his gaze said so much, she gasped aloud wanting to reach towards him but she held herself back trying hard to ignore the look full of emotions etched on his face.
"Well...your brother is married and has his first child on the way" she jumped up " REALLY!" she exclaimed, unable to hide her shock. She knew he was to be married but she thought at least she would be invited.
"I am so happy for him, my Abi and Mawat must be pleased" the tight feeling in her chest crept over her again, biting her lip to stop it trembling she carried on.
" I missed that, it seems being here I miss everything" she said giving a sad smile, reaching out she plucked a leaf from the tree studying it intently.
" When I come back from war I will speak to father asking him to at least bring you back for a festival"
A small smile crept over his face. Dropping the leaf, she got up and rushed into his arms, ignoring her quickening heart and the sadness that was consuming her. She felt the tears well in her eyes as her vision blurred but she held them back.
"Hey what's this?" he said softly stroked her hair, closing her eyes she felt his fingers brush against her skin and could smell the rich familiar scent of myrrh, that he always anointed his body with.
" Thank you" she said after a while, liking the feeling of his arms around her she could have easily stayed like that forever. She let the feeling of being safe surround her for a few more minutes before pulling away slightly, there gazes met as she looked up. She suddenly longed for him to kiss her, her breathing quickened as he leaned down... his face coming closer... his soft lips nearing hers...closing her eyes , she waited as he brought his lips towards hers but his lips never came... opening her eyes in a flash she looked up into his distraught face seeing him fight with his own emotions.
" My brother" he whispered as he pulled away, letting her go he cleared his throat " My brother is also expecting his first child" not knowing what to say she just nodded, as her brain desperately tried to process what just happened. Her cheeks flushed red.
" And... Well... Khep... I am going to be married soon, father is announcing it after we return from war" she stepped back. It was like he had just slapped her in the face. Turning away she felt the tears well in her eyes as her heart ached, It was like a sword had been thrust through her heart it felt like it had shattered into a million pieces.
" I am sorry Khep. I have to go my men have no idea where I am and I want to make a move tonight. I am sorry I shouldn't have come".
She heard him walk away into the darkness... falling to her knees she let the tears fall down her face as she put her head in her hands. The breeze rushed through the trees whispering as the leaves swirled around her. " Prehir" she whispered "I'm glad you came."
