"Prehir" Khepri screamed...
She fell onto the hard ground, catching her shoulder on a large stone. She almost passed out from the pain as it charged like lightning through her body, her vision blurred and everything went a dazzling white for a moment.
"Khep!"
She heard Prehir's voice calling out her name in a panic but it sounded as if she were underwater, slightly muffled and far away. The words floated gently as if time had stood still.
A huge weight, suddenly pushed down on her chest almost crushing her. She found she couldn't breathe. She looked up as her vision cleared to see that a mighty lion was on top of her pinning her to the ground, it growled, showing it's white glistening teeth in the light of Prehir's torch. She screamed and brought up her arms as the huge creature with a mane that was streaked with black went to snap at her.
Prehir threw the torch aside and unsheathed his sword, charging towards the lion. Khepri screamed again as she struggled underneath the creature, fighting with all her strength. It's jaws snapping at her, she found a thick wooden stick and was using it to try and keep the lion at bay. All the while she prayed to Hathor with all her might that she would survive this.
"Khep!"
Prehir cried, swinging his sword at the lion. The lion, let go of the stick just as it broke in half and jumped off Khepri. It gave an ear deafening roar as it faced it's new opponent, charging straight towards Prehir.
The excruciating pain made Khepri feel weak and dizzy, barely being able to move she tried to get up, as she watched with growing horror as Prehir lunged and ducked and the majestic creature attacked. It moved with grace, every attack was lethal but Prehir was one of the best fighters in the army. He calculated it's movements in his head and with every swipe more red streaks would appear in the lions fur marking its body with deep gashes.
He jumped to the side, avoiding its sharp claws.
"Khep, Khep are you okay? Hang on, please hang on!"
He shouted. She could sense the rising panic in his voice.
Barely being able to speak she just nodded. The lion lunged at him again, this time, he was just a little too slow in reacting. Khepri gave a shriek as the sword went flying from Prehir's hand and he fell backwards into the sand. The lion jumped at him, seizing the chance. Giving a cry all pain disappeared and Khepri ran to find the sword, grabbing it, she ran towards the lion as it's jaws clamped down onto Prehir's arm he gave a cry as he pulled out a dagger with his other hand.
In perfect unison, Khepri and Prehir stabbed the lion, him in the neck and her in its side. The creature gave one last ear-splitting roar before falling to the ground. Prehir rolled to the side before it could fall onto him.
Khepri dropped the sword and fell to her knees, crawling to Prehir. He was covered in blood, a dark red stain appearing in the sand around him as he clung onto his arm.
"Prehir" she whispered gently, feeling the tears fall down her face.
"Prehir please be alright" she took his hand. It felt clammy and calloused from all the sword fighting and bow practice he did.
He looked up at her, his dark eyes shining in the light from the torch. She could see small beads of sweat appearing on his forehead.
" You are a goddess" he whispered, as he smiled gently at her.
"Khep you are my goddess" he let go of her hand and reached up to touch her face.
She felt herself blush, feeling the warmth of his hand brush against her skin.
"We need to get you back to the palace, your hurt" she took his hand away from her cheek and went to get up but he took her hand, stopping her.
"Khep. I.... I...." she stopped him by putting her finger to his lips.
"Don't say it. You are to marry Wadjyt. Your father and my father would never allow it. You need to marry a princess for one day you might have to take the throne. And my path... my path is to become a priestess."
She stopped, turning away so he wouldn't see her tears.
"Why? Why can I not marry you and make you my chief wife? Why must you become a priestess? do you even wish to be one? Is it because you also like my brother?"
She turned back to him in shock and looked into his eyes that had grown stormy.
"What? No. I."
"It's okay. I know you love us both. I have known that for a long time, but I would still marry you even knowing that you wouldn't give me your whole heart as I love you Khep and I always have."
Suddenly they heard the sound of men shouting and the silence was broken.
"There here!"
Soldiers appeared led by Tarik, as soon as he saw them he came running over. A look of horror written on his face as he saw the young Prince.
" Prehir what happened? Can you move?"
Prehir sat up slowly, swaying for a moment before closing his eyes.
"I'm fine."
He said after a short pause and got up slowly, stumbling. Tarik grabbed hold of him before turning to Khepri.
"Sister are you okay?" his eyes swept over her, a look of concern furrowed his brow.
She looked at Prehir still in shock at his words. She nodded not being able to speak.
Prehir looked at her his eyes glittering with sadness, before him and Tarik made their way towards one of the chariots.
Her whole body hurt and her heart ached in her chest as she replayed the words he had said. She was to be a priestess that was what was expected of her. That was what her father and mawat wanted. No way could she become a Queen. No way, could she allow herself to be swept up in the dream of being by Prehir's side.
