We were sitting on a wooden bench
In a park full of green grass
Barking dogs
And cement paths leading to the water

You looked at my arm
And a tiny little scar laid upon my skin
You proceeded to look into my eyes
And you questioned that tiny little scar

I began to tell you the stories
How I got each scar on my body
But I began with the very first
The one upon my toe

I told you how when I was three, I was wild
I had been balancing on a wooden beam
In my backyard full of green grass
When I got a splinter in my toe

The splinter came out
But it left behind a tiny little bruise
On my big toe
On my right foot

The next scar I got was on my knee
When I was five years old I was crazy
Mother told me not to run by the blue pool
But I did not listen

So I had tripped and fell
Scraping my knee on the cement
The tears had gone away
But my knee never quite healed completely

About ten years later
When I was almost 15
I received a lovely scar on my stomach
On the right side for that matter

Mother said it is barely noticeable
But I notice it and I remember
The anxiety filled night at the hospital
When I had to have my appendix removed

At 17 years old
I got the scar on my arm that you asked about
It was from my dog though
She had scratched me on accident

It's been a while since that last scar
But maybe that's not the last one
Because if you count all the scars on my heart
Then there are several more stories to tell
