That Day

Good morning honey
It's 6:00 a.m.
How are you doing?
How have you been?
Did you sleep well last night?
Yes I did
Don't forget to say goodbye to the kids

Kissed Jack on the head
Lilly on the cheek
Told them he loved them
Loving them was so easy
I'll be back late tonight
Don't wait up for me
He told his wife and grabbed the key
She smiled and shook her head
I need you next to me in bed
What do you want for dinner tonight?
What about steak and carrots and rice?
That sounds lovely and just right

See you later she said
To her husband walking out the door
See you later he said
Never knew in a few hours
She would be crying on the floor

Making breakfast for Lilly and Jack
Turns on the news again
With the TV behind her back
It's a little after nine
And she didn't realize
What would be on the screen this time
Mommy why are those buildings falling
Mommy why is there smoke outside
Mommy mommy where is daddy
She turned to the tv and cried
As the towers fell down
She grabbed the phone to call up
Her husband didn't answer
She kept calling till her fingers went numb
She knew she wouldn't get through to him
She knew she wouldn't find where he was
Everything hit her like a full on train
When the buildings burned to the ground
And all she could feel was pain

Hours passed by
Sits at home waiting
All her friends and family
They keep on calling
Have you heard from him yet?
Please tell me, is he home yet?
How are the kids doing?
Do they know what's happening?
As they ask those questions
She can't help but think
About his beautiful smile
And the happiness it brings

She hung up with his mother
They found comfort in each other
But nothing could dry her tears
She picked up the phone again
Dialed his number one more time
Finally it went through
He said loud into the phone
I love you
She shouted back
I love you too
He said he was on the 40th floor
Him and his coworkers let the women go first
But it wasn't looking good for them
Put jack and Lilly on I needa say goodbye
He said in her ear
No honey you'll be home you'll be here
I don't know how much longer I have
Just let me have these moments
So I can make them last
And through her tears she handed the phone
To her kids
They asked when he was coming home
And he was never one to lie
So he told them the truth
And made them cry
He didn't want them to have false hope
They said they loved him too
Then handed her the phone back
She never wanted to hang up
But time was running out
I love you I love you
Never forget that now

Phone disconnected
She broke down on the floor
Seven o'clock rolled around
There was a knock at the door
She knew it was going to be bad
Was it an officer?
What would he tell her?
Would he say her husband didn't make it?
She didn't want the truth to be real
She did not know how to feel
But they knocked again
So she stood up and walked over
Hand on the knob
Held herself together
And opened it up
