Christmas Eve in the Grey-Shepherd house was a family favorite. Although they were not very traditional by any means, Meredith and Derek loved to be traditional this time of year. They started traditions with the kids the prior year, and they were determined to instill the traditions in the kids lives forever.
"You want the kids to wake up at 6am to open presents?" Derek asked Meredith while they were getting ready for bed the night before Christmas Day.
"Yes. I think it would be fun for them. Especially since Noah is usually up at that time anyways." Meredith said.
"Right. Well, if that's what you want to do." Derek said.
"It's what I want to do." Meredith replied. "I was always super pumped as a kid to wake up on Christmas, my mom always went all out even if she was a horrible mom all other days of the year, so made it a thing to be home in the morning on Christmas to see me open my presents. She hated the fact that I always woke up at 6am, but she loved to be there."
"Then we can do it." Derek said.
"Good." Meredith smiled as she got in the bed and pulled the covers up on her and fell asleep.
Christmas in Seattle is always miserable. It snows. A lot. It's always cold. But what should they expect, it's the Pacific North West. This Christmas in Seattle had been especially miserable. Although it was miserable, and Meredith and Derek had no neighbors in sight, they went all out with Christmas decorations inside and outside of their beautiful house in the woods.
The next morning, the kids were sound asleep at 6am. Meredith and Derek woke up and went downstairs to do a few last minute things before waking up the kids.
"Go get them." Derek said with a smile.
Aubrie was finally at that age where she could fully understand Christmas and that was everything to Meredith and Derek since that holiday means so much to them.
"Baby girl." Meredith said as she sat down on Aubrie's toddler bed and pushed Aubrie's hair out of her face.
"Santa came?" Aubrie asked.
"Yeah baby." Meredith said. "Santa came. Let's go get your brother up." With that, Meredith and Aubrie went to go get Noah who was in the next room over sound asleep.
"We have to be quiet." Meredith said. "You're never supposed to wake a sleeping baby, but we can make an exception because it's Christmas, right?" Meredith asked Aubrie.
"Right." Aubrie said.
Meredith went in Noah's room and rubbed his back, trying to wake him up that way, which worked. She picked him up and carried him downstairs with Aubrie by her side.
"Daddy look Santa came." Aubrie said as she ran over to the Christmas tree.
"Yeah sweetie, Santa came." Derek said as he walked over to Meredith and took Noah from her.
"Open it." Noah said.
"Yeah, let's open some." Derek said as he sat down on the floor with Noah in his lap. Meredith sat next to the tree ready to hand out gifts to the kids so they could open them.
Aubrie tore into all her presents but took everything in. She gasped every time she opened something new.
Noah.. he's still so young so he doesn't totally understand the whole Christmas thing. He gets that there's gifts and that you open them, clearly, but he doesn't understand it yet.
Meredith and Derek always get each other 1 big gift, and 3 little gifts. Meredith's big gift to Derek was always season tickets for the Seahawks and playoff tickets, if they made it. Derek's big present was always a flashy surgery and date night for the two of them to the nicest restaurant in Seattle, which just happened to be the most expensive so they basically equalled each other out.
"I have one more gift for you, but you have to wait until tonight to get it." Meredith said to Derek.
"Oh, really?" Derek asked.
"Not what you're thinking." Meredith said.
"Oh please." Derek said.
"I have something for both of you too!" Meredith said looking at Aubrie and Noah.
"Yay!" Aubrie said.
Noah was passed out in Derek's arms, apparently 6am was too early for him.
As the day went on, Aubrie sat in front of the tv basically all day playing with her new toys and watching Christmas movies on tv, while Meredith, Derek and Amelia were prepping for Christmas dinner. Everyone was coming over for it, and since Meredith really can't cook, Derek enforced the help of his little sister.
Guests started to arrive at 5. Of course Alex was the first person, he wanted to see the kids and give them their gifts before anyone else came. He was followed by everyone else. Jackson and April, Owen and Cristina, Lexie and Mark, Arizona and Callie.. Everyone was there.
Dinner was ready at 6, and everyone gathered around the table to eat.
"Derek, can you come here for a sec." Meredith said as she stood up and walked towards the stairs, Derek followed. "Come." Meredith said as she walked up the stairs and walked into their room.
"I have a Christmas gift for you. It's in the bag on the bed." Meredith said.
"This better be good if you made me wait all day." Derek said.
"Hm.. I think you'll be impressed." Meredith said.
Derek opened the bag and pulled out the present. It was the best present that he ever got for Christmas, besides her.
They went back down to eat dinner with everyone else. Of course they got stares as they sat down, but they didn't care.
After everyone finished eating, Meredith took both the kids upstairs to "get ready for bed" and came back down stairs with both kids in hand to find everyone sitting in the living room talking. Meredith let Noah down so he could walk around.
"Uncle." Noah said as he looked up at Alex.
"Hey little man." Alex said as he picked Noah up and sat him on his lap.
Meredith and Derek stood next to their Christmas tree together waiting for someone to say something about the kids. Aubrie became very fond of Amelia and was sitting on her lap on the floor.
Everyone was talking and then Alex went silent.
"Meredith." Alex said.
Meredith looked at Derek.
"Yes?" Meredith said.
"What's up with his shirt?" Alex asked.
"What does it say?" Meredith asked back.
"World's best big brother." Alex said.
Meredith just smiled.
"Aubrie what does your shirt say?" Meredith asked.
"Worlds best big sister... again." Aubrie answered.
"Are you pregnant?" Alex asked.
"Yes." Meredith said with the biggest smile on her face.
"I was planning on keeping it a secret but I just couldn't and i'm so scared but we're really excited and.." Meredith was cut off by Alex.
"Shut up." Alex said. "Congratulations." He said. "Noah, you're gonna be a big brother."
Noah nodded his head.
"3 kids." Derek whispered in Meredith's ear.
"3 kids." Meredith responded as she turned around and hugged him.
