----------------
Years have passed. Henry has just left Storybrooke to find Emma, and Chess has finally reached August, who is now on his way. For the first time since the curse was placed, Jefferson and Chessur have hope of breaking free and returning to the Enchanted Forest.
As always, Granny's smells of root beer and French fries.
"Do you know what you want?" Ruby asks us.
"The usual, please. Thanks," I reply, smiling at her.
"Just tea for me, thanks," Jefferson requests softly. The more time we are trapped here, the less he eats, sleeps, talks. At least with time he's joined society. He opened a hat shop to fill time, and David has accepted him as a friend, with a little encouragement from me.
"We're close, Jefferson. This curse will be broken. We will go home," I reassure him. "We will get Grace back..." I add quietly. Jefferson smiles weakly.
"Such the eternal optimist... No wonder you're always smiling. I thought maybe you'd gone mad," he jokes. Suddenly the door slams open and Regina storms into Granny's.
"Where is my son? Well?! Someone must have seen him, this is a very small town! Now someone tell me where Henry is!" She screams. Everyone is silent. Ruby sneaks out of the kitchen and slides my plate and Jefferson's tea across our tabletop and hurries back, avoiding Regina's eyes.
"Fine. If no one will tell me where he went, I'm going to have to look for him myself. I hope you're all happy about the disappearance of a child." Regina declares coldly, and stalks out of the diner.
"Why should I help her get her kid back when she's still keeping mine from me," Jefferson mutters after the door closes behind her. I have just taken a bite of my sandwich when the door again swings open, but with less force this time.
"Kitty, I hate to interrupt that delicious looking meal, but you're shift at the hospital started five minutes ago, and oddly enough, Storybrooke has a surprising lack of nurses, so..." Dr. Whale saunters over to our table.
"Oh yeah, we have real lives here," I smile sarcastically at Jefferson, then ask Ruby for a box. "I'll be right there, Whale. See you at the house, Jefferson," I squeeze his hand, then follow Whale to the door, boxed food in hand.
