*The light changes from red to green. The car rolls forward, gaining momentum as Hayley pushes down the gas pedal.
"Did you know Anna broke up with Craig? I thought they were perfect for each other," you ramble, not paying attention to the quickly passing surroundings. You hear the screech of tires and look up just in time to see an SUV spinning out to the left of Hayley, and feel the jolt as it slams into the driver's side before you black out*

Your eyes fly open as you wake up screaming.
"Hayley, oh god..." You sob. Chris runs into your room and holds you for a long time before speaking.
"The nightmares again? I know you feel guilty, but there was nothing you could have done to save her. You were almost killed yourself. Here, come get in my bed and you can tell me about it," he picks you up and carries you into his room, setting you down on the bed gently.
"It was the crash again... I just miss her. After the accident, my life just went downhill, and that was when I needed her most. Sometimes I think she sent you to look after me," you snuggle into his bare chest. He just holds you, and you feel his breaths slow as he falls asleep. You lie in the dark, thinking about the past few months. Almost a year since the crash killed Hayley and put you in the hospital. Six months of toiling at the firm just to get barely enough to keep your apartment after you were released from the hospital. It had been three months since you had your breakdown and met Chris. After you met him, it took the two of you only a few weeks to find you a job you actually liked. During that time, Chris insisted you move in with him until you got your feet back under you. Really, he's been a godsend. You roll onto your side and look at him, sleeping peacefully, and smile. You lean into his chest and drift off to sleep again.

"Hey, (Y/N), you awake?" Chris nudges you. "Your dad found this in his attic, and he thought you might want it, so he mailed it here... After last night, I wanted to do something special for you, so..." He places something on the bed next to you. You smile sleepily and pick up the worn book. Flipping through it, you see yourself and Hayley at the pool, and in your little Halloween costumes, and with your dates before prom. You laugh and cry and remember your childhood, looking at the old photo album.
"Chris, I... I don't know what to say. I really needed this. Thank you," you stammer, tears still running down your cheeks. He wipes them away and leans in slowly, pressing his lips onto yours gently.
"No matter how rough your life gets, I hope that I'm always there to help you through it," Chris whispers.
"How rough can it get with you around?" You ask, smiling, before kissing him again.
