Third Person POV

Britney and her handful of warriors took a moment to gaze upon the bloody battlefield. They barely passed through without killing a few vampires. Stephen made sure that they remained mostly unscathed. After all they were on a rescue mission. Armed and alert the small group trudged through the forest in search of a certain Beta and a hybrid.

Marissa's POV

I awoke groggily. My limbs ached in protest. I was secured to a tree. I tried my best to wake Chris but he was simply too far gone. Attempting to reach my 'friends' proved futile. The mind link was cut and I was to blame for it. We were being guarded by two vampires.

My heart simply broke. This is how I was going to die. I was going to die a coward. Never would I grow old with my mate. I'll never be proposed to. I'll never be wed. Worst of all, my mate was going to die because of my decisions. My decision was the reason Chris may not see the light of another day.

The two vampire chatted between themselves. I tried my best to listen to what they were saying but I couldn't. They must have drugged me with wolfsbane. I tried wiggling out of the chains. I tried to break them. Nothing. I could feel the tears welling up in my eyes. I did nothing to fight them. I let them run and prayed that the moon goddess would send me help.

"Ahh look the bitch is awake." the taller one spoke.

"Indeed brother. Do you think her blood is as sweet as her face?" he licked his lips.

I tried to keep a steady tear-stained face as I replied, "Someone will come for us and I will be the one to tear you limb from limb." I barely recognized my own voice. I sounded weak. Broken. As the time passed I could feel my strength slowly coming back. Christian was still out. At that moment all I wanted to do was touch his face and hold him in my arms. I could hear the cries of the wounded.

From the corner of my eye I thought I saw my former Alpha. It couldn't be. No one was going to come for us. My mind was certainly playing tricks on me. That was before I heard the battle cry coming from the other side of me. Didn't they learn strike first yell later? A fight ensued. I felt the heavy chains break free. My limbs dropped to my side. I tried to stretch them off a bit and rushed to the aid of my mate. By the time he was freed the vampires were dead and I was staring into the eyes of a very mad Alpha.

"You betrayed us. I should kill you right now." She growled. A wolf I didn't recognize touched her shoulder. Her expressions softened and she continued, "But I won't. You will go and fight along with your mate."

"But we're wounded." I argued back.

"When did I ask you that? We're actually fighting like a TEAM. A FAMILY. But you wouldn't know anything about that right?"

Ouch.

     "I-----I can.."

She raised her hand up, "That's enough. The wolves behind me will stick with you. Good luck." And with that she shifted into her wolf and ran off in the direction of what I assumed was the fight.

I held Chris in my arms begging him to open his eyes. After a few moments, the wolf who had placed his hand on Britney injected Chris with something. He began to stir. I thanked him profusely.

"My love, you are alright?" he spoke in a raspy voice.

"Me? Alright? Chris, you were knocked out for a while. I was so worried that you wouldn't wake up at all?" I cried.

"We're going to win. I promise. You and I will live through this. I promise." he spoke softly.

"How do you know that?" I asked. He seemed so sure of himself.

"Because love always wins over hate." I chuckled at his response. After a few moments of rest we were on our feet. We had a war to win. We split into two groups. Chris in one and  I was in the other.

By the time we were on the battlefield, the stench of blood invaded my nostrils. The fight seemed to be equal but dark was coming soon. Sure, the moon made us stronger but then we could lose. The darkness brings out its favorite tricks.

A chill ran up my spine. I could feel a strong power. An energy emanating from the center of the field. Two wolves circled each other. It was as if time stood still and for this moment would decide our fates.

The black wolf charged at the white wolf aiming for her neck. She appeared tired and slow in her movements. He caught her foot and red blood trickled down her ankle. Both wolves were equally matched in strength and speed. They charged at each other full force ahead. Crimson blood pooling at their ankles. The white wolf sustained bites to the torso whilst the black wolf sustained bites to the shoulder. Their eyes held hatred, disgust but determination to win. It was so surreal. The white wolf pulled back once then charged. She got ahold of the black wolf's neck and she didn't let go. The black wolf struggled but she held on for her life depended on it. The black wolf yelped in submission but still she didn't let go. After a few moments of growling and yelping only silence pervaded the air. The white wolf stepped away. Her coat tinged with the blood of her now decapitated brother.

She sent out a mind link to those who followed her "Kill them all. NOW. An army is weak without its leaders."

"Marissa. Regina. Courtney. Cristal. Those in my council follow closely behind me. It is time. Our blood shall no longer be shed." Her voice sounded powerful.

That night we returned to the pack house. Many were lost. Widows and orphans wept. Prisoners were put into the dungeons and so was I. A brick wall separated Christian and I. We were alive and at that moment that is what had mattered most.
