Chapter 18

"Amanda?" A weak voice croaked.

I felt James grip my hand tighter as I froze from the sound of her voice. "I can't." I walked back out.

"Amanda? That's your friend.. I know it's hard to look at her in such a fragile state but she needs you." James said tugging me back to the room.

"Okay.." I let out a breath and walked back in.

"You okay?" She asked giving a faint smile.

My heart broke a bit when I saw her laying there, she was pale, her lips chapped, her eyes half closed, shivering. "What about you?" I asked walking to her holding onto her hand.

Her mom watched us from the other side of the room with a small smile yet she had tears in her eyes. "I'm fine. I'm more worried about you and why you two aren't together yet." She looked from me to James.

James chuckled and sat down in a chair as I sat on the bed. "It's complicated."

"No..it's not." She coughed.

"Visiting time is over." A nurse walked in.

"We just got here! Can't we have a little more time?" I pleaded.

"I'm sorry miss but no." She left.

I turned to Sarah and kissed her forehead. "I'll be here tomorrow okay? We'll have fun just like old times." I promised.

"Okay, goodnight Amanda."

"Love you!" I told her as James grabbed my hand pulling me towards the door.

"Love you." She smiled. Her mom waved at me as I her and James said his goodbyes as well.

I was immediately brought into a hug the moment we stepped out of the room.

"What am I gonna do?" I wailed.

He rubbed my back soothingly while squeezing me tighter. "She's my everything! She's all I have!"

"You have me." He said quietly. "Please don't cry."

"Okay." I pushed him away wiping my eyes. "I'm good." I said trying to convince myself.

He gave me a look then rolled his eyes. "It's gonna rain soon-"

"I have the shift! I completely forgot! What time is it?" I asked frantically walking to the elevator.

"Five-"

"Thank god!" I yelled getting into the elevator. "I still have time."

"Stop yelling! People are gonna think we're weird!" He shouted.

We looked up noticing a man and woman standing there with wide eyes. We looked at each other awkwardly then James asked," Are you gonna come in or just stand there? Didn't you hear people have places to be!!" He gave them a look.

"Uh, we'll just take the next one.." The man said smiling awkwardly.

"Okay.." I blushed and pressed a button.

We stayed in silence for a moment then bursted out laughing. "Did you see there face? They totally think we're crazy." He laughed harder.

"Oh no." I giggled rolling my eyes.

The door opened with a 'ding' and we stepped out together.

After an agonizing five hours of working I went home to an empty house and a pizza box on the counter with a note. I didn't bother to read it knowing my dad was saying that he would be at work late.

When it was around eleven it was raining harshly and thunder boomed. I started to get scared since I hate thunder. My phone rang and I answered it knowing who it was. "James." I whimpered.

"You okay? Sorry I didn't walk you home my mom-"

I screamed as the lights went out and a flash was seen from outside."Amanda?! Are you okay?!" I heard James say his voice being drowned out by the sound of rain.

"T-The lights!! My heart! I'm scared." I felt the tears burn my eyes.

"Open your door!" He yelled.

I ran to the front door opening it, attacking him when he walked in. "Hey! Hey I'm here, it's okay now.. I'm here to protect you." He continued to whisper sweet nothings into my ear closing the door.

We went to my room and laid in the bed, I was shaking. "Relax." He told me getting up and going to the bathroom. He came back and wiped my face with a towel then got some clothes for me to sleep in. "I'm gonna take a piss." He said leaving.

I changed then ran to the bed slipped under the covers curling into a ball when I heard the loud clap of thunder.

James came back taking his shirt off then slipped in next to me. "What are you doing?" I asked scooting away from him.

"Getting comfortable." He said in a duh voice then took his pants off. I covered my eyes listening to him laugh.

"I'm not gonna do anything, plus my clothes were wet." He put an arm around me.

We stayed in silence, for the first time the storm wasn't so bad. I held onto him falling into a deep sleep happy to be with him.
