6.13.16 | 19 Days.
A cold damp cloth pressed against my forehead causing my eyes to squint at the sudden cool temperature. I opened my eyes slowly allowing my vision to focus. My gaze met with Harry's who beamed happily when he saw me wake up.
"How are you feeling?" He asked softly, compassion and conern coating his words.
I nodded my head looking up at him.
I look around the room and realize that it was Harry's. It was as if I was a kid again playing card games on the floor of his room. I turn my head to get a better look at the room. I notice a picture of Harry and I on his bedside table I remember this day so distinctly: we were both five and it was before the first day of school ever. His navy polo was too big for his tiny body. And my glasses were obviously too big for my face. We were smiling wide as we both gave each other bunny ears. I think that was the one and only time I was ever taller than him.
I then look out the window directly across from his bed. From here you could see right into my room. We would always attempt to throw paper airplanes to each other through our windows, it obviously never worked and ended up being a waste of paper, but to us it was the funniest thing we've ever done.
Everything seemed so simple back then, but now I was here trying to comprehend what had just happened downstairs. It seemed to be a complicated mess, but in reality it was this easy to understand: Harry was marrying the girl who just so happened made my life a living nightmare, and I couldn't do anything about it.
I wanted to be happy for Harry, that's all I ever want, but he was marrying Violet Lane. The girl who made my secondary school career a miserable one to remember. Of course, Harry didn't know about Violet's harassment toward me, he was the most popular student there. Everyone liked him so he didn't even experience the torment that I endured everyday. People were always so surprised to see him and I together. What shocked them even more was when they found out that Harry and I were best friends.
But I knew that if we weren't neighbors, he wouldn't have been as nice to me as he was and still is. I never told him that though- I knew that he would just deny the ludacris idea.
"You really haven't changed one bit, Emmie," Harry faintly chuckled.
"What's that supposed to mean?" I asked defensively turning my head sharply to direct my attention back to him.
"You have the tendency to faint, all the time."
"Do not!" I argued and I sat up, immediately feeling a little woozy by the rapid movement. I quickly fell back down.
"Woah, not too fast Emmie." Harry said setting me back on the pillow gently. "You scared us all down there," Harry told me, opening the drawer on his bedside table and handing me a Milky Way, "Here, eat this. You'll feel better."
"After all these years, I'd think that you were smart enough to find a better hiding spot," I chuckled taking the small candy bar from him. "I guess you haven't changed much either."
I knew how Harry was protective over his secret stash, but he would always have one to share for me.
Harry smiled at my remark, helping me sit up slower this time.
"So what do you think of Violet?" Harry asked.
I pause for a second my smile fading, "She's-uh..." I trailed off trying to phrase this correctly, "She is definitely different from the last time I remembered." I nodded.
"I know you two weren't the closest friends in school-"
"Harry!" I interrupted, "We were on complete opposite ends of the spectrum. Don't you remember?"
