I walked down the hall alone, trying to figure out which room might be Harry's. I knew he wouldn't want to see me at the moment, but I needed to apologize. I didn't like it when he was mad at me and I didn't want there to be any tension today.
I heard cheering in one room and quietly looked into the crack of the door. I held my breath as I tried to stay unnoticed.
The boys stood there with champagne flutes in their hands as they all smiled. They all, of course, looked dashing in their matching suits.
My eyes drifted over to Harry who was beaming from ear to ear. He was so handsome, and so happy. But there was a certain look in his eyes. A look of uneasiness.
I knew that look: it was the same look he had when I left for Cambridge. Something was wrong, but I knew I couldn't just walk in there and ask him.
If the circumstances were different, I would be in there raising a toast with them.
I let out a quiet sigh and walked away from the room.
Maybe I made a bad decision by coming, I thought shaking my head.
But I knew if I couldn't make amends with Harry today, then I would try with Violet. It was time for someone to step up and be the bigger person, and if not her than me.
I briskly paced down the hall to Violet's room. With a light knock on the wooden door, a frosted voice pealed, "Come in."
"Good afternoon," I smiled walking in watching as her two bridesmaids tended to her dress after she had put it on.
The isabelline fabric that locked to her olive frame was enthralling. The gleaming jewels that epitomized the very dress she donned were nothing compared to the jewels that were her eyes; the sapphire gems that left anyone breathless.
This woman before me was the reason for the splinters in my heart, but I could not deny the sheer competency she crowned for the man I loved. Harry deserved the best, and if he thought that Violet was it, that is who he will have.
Violet smiled through the reflection of the highlighting mirror, her back facing me.
"Oh hello, Emily."
I stepped closer to the trinity of the beautiful girls.
"How's everything coming along?" I asked.
"Wonderfully," One of the bridesmaids stated, "Vi already looks like a blushing bride."
It was true; she was radiant in every way. Her locks of blonde were compiled into a rippled bun, framing her heart-shaped face. The oceans in her eyes were cogent beneath her long, dusky lashes. The apples of her cheeks were an angelic pink, shimmery in the light. Her full lips colored a soft petal, like the mimosas outside in the meadow. She was beautiful.
"Vi, we will be right back!" The bridesmaids said rushing out of the room.
I looked back over at Violet, who's smile faded when she made eye contact with me.
"Now what do you really want?" Violet asked bitterly. Her words like snakes venom.
"Well I just want to officially say congratulations. Harry's really lucky for marrying an amazing girl like-"
"Save it." She interrupted me and I let out a quick gasp. "Don't try to kiss up to me now in attempt to be friends. We were never friends and we never will be. EW..."
My jaw dropped at her cold words. I quickly close my mouth and regain my confidence but it was like I was right back in high school again. Everything that I had built up came crashing down.
"Don't look so surprised."
"I'm sorry, but you're the one that came in here acting like you had no idea who I was. Or what you did."
"You are just so stuck in the past aren't you?" She narrowed her devious blue eyes at me.
"Hey," I interrupted, "I just wanted an apology. I deserve one."
"It was secondary school," she commented rolling her eyes.
"You don't get to belittle this. You can't just ruin someone's life and pretend it didn't happen. You don't get to decide if you hurt someone or not." I argued, "Do you have any idea of what all those years of torment did to me? Everyday I would come home and feel horrible about myself, and it was all because of you."
Violet didn't respond. And for a split second I thought she may have had a change in heart, she would give me the apology I deserved. But again my false hope led me to believe something incredibly impractical.
She peered down at my necklace, quickly grasping it in her hands and tugged on the chain so hard it snapped apart.
I gasp as the piece of jewelry pattered on the ground broken. I bit my bottom lip entirely too hard and felt my eyes burn with the tears that I thought wouldn't be able to produce anymore.
"Oh are you going to cry?" Violet giggled, "I cannot believe this...God you really haven't changed since school. I mean, sure learned how to spend more than a few euros on a hair cut and invested in contacts, but you're the same nerdy, little-"
"That's enough!" Someone shouted.
Violet and I immediately turned around; our faces scared and alert to find a concerned and angry Harry.
He had seen and heard the whole thing, I thought and my mouth dropped wide open.
"Harry," Violet whispered, her breath caught in her throat.
"What's going on?" He asked his tone irritated and shocked.
Violet stood there with her mouth open trying to find the words.
My eyes paced back and forth from between a speechless Violet and an infuriated Harry.
My body was frozen. I wanted to leave the room, and let them decide what the next move was. But here I was. My feet stuck to the ground like cement blocks, forcing me to watch it all unravel.
"Wow you are so good. I just can't believe that I fell for that-that whole act you put up. I am so stupid!" He pauses his hands turning white from the tight fist he held. "Because I fell for it. I thought I knew exactly who you were!"
"You do know who I am, Harry!" Violet argued, her voice pleading.
"Yes, I do know who you are Violet." He paused again, this time looking over at me and then back to her, "You're a-"
He stopped himself. He didn't want to say what we all were thinking.
I felt the hair prick up my back, as my face flushed a pale color. I felt sick to my stomach, almost as if I was going to pass out at any given second. But I tried to remain strong, knowing that me fainting would just add more unneeded problems to the situation at hand.
He tugged at his hair, frustration was written all over his face. "I-I can't do this."
My heart stopped and I gasped sharply. I wanted to freeze time and start this day over. If I hadn't come to this wedding then this wouldn't be happening. I would've saved two heartbreaks.
"What do you mean?" Violet sobbed, her voice cracking with each word she spoke.
"I can't marry you. You aren't who I thought you were." He stammered backing away.
He looked at me as he continued walking away and my heart broke seeing him so torn apart. I knew I should follow him, but I didn't know if I was the first person he wanted to see right now.
"Look what you did. You've ruined everything!" Violet shouted at me, blaming me for the situation she had created. "Harry!" She called out, running after the heartbroken boy.
But I knew this was coming, if not now than later. I don't know which would've been better or worse, however the truth needed to come out at some point.
