For those who love
To feel weightless

For me it's so much more
I'm not a lap swimmer
Though each week or two
I make a new goal to achieve
A new optimal

1 lap = a mile
A lap is technically to
The other side of the pool
And back
35 laps = 1 mile

My current
Optimal is 11 laps
My ultimate optimal
Is 35 laps
1 mile

Because each stroke I take forward
Each push
Each finish
I do it as another step
In my recovery

As well as for those who can't get
To a pool
To water
To peace

So when I reach
My ultimate optimal someday
It won't just be my victory
But for all of us

For now
I'll just keep swimming
Onward and onward
Forward towards
