Chapter Twenty Two: Micah

Micah's POV:

I sat there trying not to seem too eager but let’s face it… I can hardly breathe. He’s awake. I looked to Sean who sat next to Megan. She’d been crying since we got the text from Declan’s mother. I didn’t think I’d get back to my routine but Harper wouldn’t let me give up. She made me get up and get dress to go to school. At first I hated her for doing that but then I understood I needed it. I needed the distraction because I was going bonkers just sitting in my room staring at the wall. I was in the middle of chemistry when I felt my phone buzzing. Pulling it out I flipped it open. I watched Mr. Anderson give me a frown but he didn’t say anything. When I saw it was from Declan’s mom I started to hyperventilate. I couldn’t open the text fast enough. There in bold letters was the best news I’d ever gotten in my life.

                ‘HE’s AWAKE!!’ It said. Jumping from my chair I started shouting and screaming at the top of my lungs. Everyone looked at me like I was crazy. Mr. Anderson started slamming his yard stick against his desk to get my attention.

                “What is the meaning of this?” Mr. Anderson yelled. Turning to him I showed him my phone.

                “HE’S AWAKE!! DECLAN IS AWAKE!!” Just like me the other students started to scream and yell. Reaching for his phone Mr. Anderson dialed the front office. Not a second after he hung up the PA system sounded.

                “I’m sorry for the interruption teachers and students but I’ve just been given word that Declan Crawford is awake!” I could hear the other classes exploding with cheers and screams. Grabbing my books I shoved them in my bag.

                “I’m leaving now Mr. Anderson. I promise I will make up the work and if you have to give me detention I understand.” And with that I was out the door. I was running full speed when another class room door swung open. Mildred and Sean came rushing out.

                “Going to get Laurie!” Mildred shouted over her shoulder. Tossing me his bag Sean started for the stairs.

                “I’ll get Bryant and Megan!” Pausing at my locker I stuffed all our stuff inside and headed for the parking lot. When I reached the sidewalk I spotted Bryant, Sean and Megan booking it across the yard. Mildred and Laurie were already at the gate.

                “Mildred and I are going to get Jules!” Bryant yelled jumping over the gate to get to his car. Running to the passenger side of my car Laurie bounced up and down waiting for me to unlock the doors. Once it was unlocked she snatched it open and hopped in.

                “LET’S GO!!” She yelled slamming the door closed. Climbing into his truck Megan and Sean started the way out of the parking lot. I was second and Bryant and Mildred were last. I wanted to speed up but it seemed like every corner there was a cop posted up. It took forever for us to get there but once we were there I threw my car into a parking space and Laurie and I ran for the doors. By the time we all made it we were out of breath and Laurie was gasping for an oxygen mask. When we made it to the room they moved Declan to I had butterflies in my stomach. Maybe they weren’t butterflies; maybe they were bats or crows. I was uber nervous. I watched the nurses as they came and went back and forth through the hall. When the door opened Mrs. Crawford motioned us in. I stood with everyone but she took hold of my shoulder.

                “Not yet.” Was all she said. Nodding I sat back down and resumed my nervous leg jumping. Twenty minutes went by before the door opened again. Sean and the guys were filing out, happy grins on their faces. Behind them McClane and his parents came out. Standing I looked to Mrs. Crawford.
