As the doors opened I noticed this was the less populated floor of the whole building. They were only like ten people walking around and three of them were probably not even from this floor.
I walked in seeing as all the office doors were closed. What happened to: always leave the door open at all times? Why was this floor an exception?
I walked through the halls knocking on a two-door office with the number 108 on top. This was the third person I knew worked in the big offices. What was Harry's position in this company anyway?
"Come in."
I could barely hear from inside as I turned the door's handle pushing it open. I walked in and stood in front of his desk. He hadn't noticed me yet since his eyes seemed to be glued to some papers that were scattered all over his desk.
"Harry." I said lowly snapping him out of his work as he looked up at me. He just looked at me. Not a word leaving his mouth. What was with him today?
"Can I ask you something?" I asked still standing up in front of him. I didn't want to sit down on the chairs that stood on either side of me. I didn't want to bother him more than he probably already was.
"You are going to ask anyway so whatever." Was the only thing he said waiting for me to answer. I looked down at my flats, since I had decided I wouldn't bring heels today, and then stared back into his green eyes.
"I came in late today, two hours late to be exact. And it's not because I was sick." I said as he breathed probably knowing what I was going to ask next. "So why did you tell Mr. Strain I was sick? Why did you lie?" I asked curiously my eyes now glued to his.
"Why do you care? Just thank me and we'll both go on with our lives." He said harshly.
"I mean, thank you. I'm obviously really thankful. I could have probably lost my job today if it wasn't for you. So I need to know why you did it." I asked insisting cause the curiosity was just eating me up.
"Because..." He said looking down to his hands as his face softened. But a second later he seemed to remember something and his eyebrows furrowed turning angrily to me. "Because it benefits the company. I'm the Operations Manager, my responsibly is to seek for the financial success of the business and apparently you being part of this company has actually been really effective. Believe me if it was for me I would have thrown you out of this company since the day you stepped in." He said not taking his eyes from mine.
I looked down surprised. I was fool. I was fool to think that maybe there was another reason he saved my job. For just a second, I thought I actually started liking me and wanted me on this company because I was good at was I did or simply because he enjoyed my company, but as always he always seems to make me wrong. I looked into his eyes disappointed.
"Are you done? Is that all you need to know?" He asked frustrated.
"Yes. Thank you." I said lowly nodding not sure if he had heard me but I still turned around and left the room.
I walked through the halls entering the elevator going down to my office. I just kept walking; everything around me just went out so unnoticed. I walked around my desk and sat on my comfy chair looking up at the ceiling.
"Was I really that stupid?" I asked myself remembering what Harry had told me.
Are you really that stupid, or is it just an act?
Was I really just in this company for a promotional benefit like Harry had said? Tyler would have told me wouldn't he? That's when I remembered I hadn't talked to Tyler all day.
