Winter had settled all around them covering the ground with a thick blanket of snow. Hugo had never seen snow before, so he was quite amazed by it. The world covered in white, the cold nipping at his bare nose and pads, everywhere he looked, he could see the snowflakes falling. It was like a dream, quiet and tranquil. The world was muffled and still, his paws crunched on the ground as he walked.
Bandit and Narima watched him as he chased after snowflakes falling from the sky. Narima followed him with her eyes and growled every time he landed with a muffled thud. They had been training how to move silently at any speed. Narima was an expert at it but Hugo still made a muffled sound with every step he took.
"Hush Narima." Bandit chuckled. "He's doing fine. He needed a break from his training anyways. Why don't you go and join him? It'll be fun. You remember fun right?"
Bandit turned to look at his daughter and she stared at him with a look of disgust. She shook her fur free from the snow piling up on her back, growling in protest. She hated the way Hugo always had to right next to her and stared at her with a look of cupidity in his amber eyes.
"Oh, come on! You used to love chasing snowflakes when you were younger." Bandit shoved his daughter hard and saw her land on her side. Her black coat was covered in white once she got up. "Would you look at that? Now you look like me."
Bandit let himself fall as he rolled around laughing, throwing up more snow. Hugo turned back around to see two black and white wolves growling at each other, trying to overpower one another. He saw Narima snap at her father and he slightly being faster to avoid her teeth.
"Narima! Bandit!" He ran towards them only to have Narima tossed into him roughly.
Hugo tripped over her and was sent flying into a mound of snow. He groaned as he stood up and shook off the excess snow. At that moment, he gets kicked back into the snow. He suddenly heard Bandit's howls of laughter as he picked himself up again, shaking from the cold seeping into his fur. He growled low as the laughter echoed in his head, a reminder that he was still the laughingstock of his old pack and the Moonstone wolves. He did not enjoy being laughed at by wolves he did not know well.
"Shit, I'm sorry Hugo. Narima, behave, will you?" Bandit trotted over to Hugo as he stood still, tensing up. "Are you alright, Hugo?"
"Ha, ha, very funny." Hugo glared at Bandit. "And you couldn't have stopped her? Yea, I'm fine." Hugo turned and saw Narima smiling.
She's smiling again! She's smiling! Please keep smiling... I love seeing you smile, your eyes twinkle when you do... Hugo realized he was smiling like a fool and then got into attack mode.
"Prepare for payback!"
He took off running after Narima who began the game of chase. Bandit looked after them, watching his daughter running and playing instead of focusing on her training. It had been a tough five months for Hugo and Narima. But now that Narima was warming up to him finally, Bandit had hope.
"What the hell are you doing?!"
Narima froze mid-leap, crashing into the ground, causing Hugo to collide with her. They both became covered in snow again as Minx walked up to Narima, anger steaming off her. Hugo got up slowly, shaking his body free of snow and standing close to Narima. He did not know what to answer so he turned to see what Bandit would do.
"Minx relax, she was only playing." Bandit walked up in her defense. "She is still a pup; she deserves some time to unwind. A break from her alpha training."
"Her? Playing?" Minx snarled at Bandit, her yellow eyes hard with anger. "She's a damn princess! And you're letting her play with that would-be guard? How pathetic. It taints our image, I mean come on, Bandit. Do you not care what your subjects will think when they see her like this? And you say she's going to be alpha. Pfft, Boxer would never be seen doing something like this. He knows bet"
