Sam was so shocked he burst out into an uproar of loud laughter. He actually fell off his chair and sprawled onto the ground, he was laughing so loud.

"I don't understand what's funny," Jane demanded, ignoring Ethan, who was giggling with Sam.

"S-sorry, Mom," Sam choked. "I just thought I heard you say I had to break up with Fern." He snorted loudly, and this time Ethan fell over laughing with him.

I live with two lunatics, Jane thought.

"Well, it's true, Sam."

Sam's laughing abruptly crashed to a halt. "WHAT?"

"I know this is hard for you, Sam," Ethan, who had recovered from his previous case of hysterics, said. "But Mom and I have been talking and we don't think Fern is the best match for you."

"She is pretty short, and has darker skin," Jane chortled.

"What the crap are you..."

"Sam," Jane scolded.

He sighed. "What are you talking about? Fern's skin is just a little more tan than mine and are you saying I have to break up with her because she looks different?"

"It was a joke," Ethan said.

"It was in horrible taste."

"Sam, stop overreacting." Jane sighed. "We don't believe that girl is a good influence on you. She has all those horrid piercings and Ava told me she now jas a tattoo?"

"She took out most of the creepy ones," Sam said. "And the tattoo is just a tiny one a little above her hip. It's a skull."

"Wait. You've SEEN it?" Jane cried.

Busted. Sam backtracked. "No," he said defiantly. "She just told me."

"Good," Jane huffed. "I would've killed you if you'd actually SEEN it."

Of course he had, during their intense makeout sessions.

"We love Fern, of course, but...she just isn't RIGHT for you, Sam," Ethan said. "You're too young to know what love is, and we're just guiding you."

"Her grades are horrible, she wears too much makeup, curses all the time, and acts like some kind of rebel," Jane sniffed.

"Whereas Maya..." Ethan began.

Jane brightened. "Maya has perfect grades and is a proper young lady. She's respectful and adorable, too."

"Come on, Sam," Ethan challenged. "Who would you rather pick?"

Jane rolled her eyes. "Don't say it like that. Say it like this: Sam, we've made our choice and want you to obey it."

Sam was horrified. The thought of leaving Fern and going out with b**** Maya was just too tragic to imagine. Fern NEEDED him. If he left her, who knew what would happen? She'd smoke like crazy until she got another heart attack and eventually die.

Oh, God. Tears were welling up in his eyes just thinking of Fern dying. He swiped them away.

"Fern needs me, Mom," he croaked.

"Then continue being her friend. Who said you two had to be dating to be with each other? And by leaving Fern, you could stop Maya from hurting herself, too." Jane was ecstatic.

"No WAY, Mom. NO. WAY."

"Sam, watch your tongue," Ethan warned.

"Goodness, Sam. Who knows what Fern will lead you into? Until the day she pops out little Gothic babies?" Jane chuckled.

That was the single most insulting, disgusting, hurtful thing Sam had ever heard anyone say about Fern in his life. The tears overflowed.

Ethan glared at Jane. "That was a really bad thing to say, hon."

Jane shrugged. "Well, we never know what could happen!" she was still smiling.

"Mom." Sam was trembling. "That was the most horrible thing I've ever heard in my entire life." More tears flowed down his face.

"Sam, watch your mouth," Jane scolded.

"No, Mom. I'm not watching anything. I need her MORE than she needs me, don't you get it?" Sam's voice was getting louder. "I love her, Mom. I love her so much. When she was in the hospital, I couldn't sleep all night. I was so scared for her. She's my best, best friend and the most beautiful person in the world. Maya is a b**** , Mom. A b**** !"

Jane looked as if she were going to faint upon hearing Sam's foul language.

"She used me, Mom, just to get some kind of stupid revenge on Fern, and just for popularity. When I took Fern to DC, she knocked on our door in the middle of the night just to scream at me!"

"Yes, well, you should've taken Maya to DC then, right?" Jane murmured.

"I'm not taking that crazy anywhere. I hate her."

"Okay." Jane nodded. "That was a very nice speech, honey, but we're not budging."

"That makes no difference to me."

"You do know what will happen if..."

Sam didn't bother to listen. He stormed out of his house, slammed the door, kicked it once, and ran to Fern's.
