The next day, Sam rode with Ethan to the hospital at about 6 in the morning. He hadn’t slept all night. He needed to see Fern and Sara, NOW. He literally ran upstairs to Fern’s room. Since it was September, it was still dark in the room, with the faintest light in the window. He peered through the darkness and saw Fern sleeping on her cot, and Sara in a little glass crib-like thingy next to her, breathing softly.

Sam quickly dashed to Sara and gingerly held her, kissing her forehead. She smelled sweet. He was so, so happy holding her.

“She’s beautiful.”

The sudden sound made Sam jumped. He saw Ethan in the doorway, watching him.

“Hold her, Grandpa,” Sam told him with a laugh. Ethan smiled and took Sara into his arms. She had woken up from the light movement and was staring at Ethan without a single peep.

“My goodness,” Ethan breathed. “Would you just look at those eyes?”

Sam took Sara back quickly, kind of pissed that Sara had seen Ethan before her own dad. He didn’t have to worry, though – Sara was gazing at him with a wondrous look in her eyes. Sam sat down and could feel himself melting.

“They’re pretty,” he said to Ethan.

“What do you mean, pretty? Sam, those are your eyes, right there in Sara. And your eyes are your mother’s eyes.”

“She does have Mom’s eyes,” Sam realized. “The shape is mine, but the light brown color is completely Mom.”

Sara was staring at Sam with a look that made him feel slightly self-conscious.

“She knows,” Ethan said. “She knows you’re her dad. Look at the way she’s looking at you. She recognizes your voice.”

Sara blinked a few times. Gosh, her eyes were huge. And her mouth was in a tiny pout.

“Look at her mouth,” Sam laughed. “She looks funny.”

“She’s like you in her eyes and definitely the shape of her mouth. But look at that button nose.” Ethan chuckled. “There’s Fern. But Sara’s hair is very, very dark black. There’s you again.”

Sam was so happy by how much of him was in Sara. Ethan then left, saying he had to go to work.

“Hey,” he heard Fern say. She stretched and yawned. “How’s Sara?”

“She’s awake.” Sam touched Sara’s cheeks. She continued staring at him with that silly expression – wide eyes, pouty mouth.

“She didn’t sleep as much as the nurse predicted. I had to stay up half the night as long as she was awake and had to feed her like four times.” Fern reached for Sara and Sam slipped her into Fern’s arms.

Sara gazed at Fern just as adoringly as she had at Sam.

“Dad said she knows that we’re her parents because she recognizes our voices.”

“Heartbeat, too. She’s been inside of me for so long, she can recognize my heartbeat.” Fern pressed Sara to her chest. “Are you hungry, my widdle baby?”

“Check this out.” Sam offered his finger to Sara. She clutched it in her grape-sized hand and gurgled.

“Oh my God!” Fern exclaimed. “Did she…did she just laugh?”

“No laughing at Daddy,” Sam scolded. He kissed her.

“I’m jealous,” Fern sniffed.

“Why?” Sam smiled.

“Why is Sari getting all the kisses?”

Sam grinned. “Whoops.” He leaned forward and kissed her. Hard.

Sara gurgled again. She was happy, and was going to be for a very long time with her new family.
