Now it's not every day Jane looked out the window, expecting to observe the beautiful snowflakes, and instead sees her son and his pregnant girlfriend sprawled on the road, completely unconscious and kind of dead-looking.
"Oh, damn," Jane sucked in a deep breath. "ETHAN!" she rushed outside in her slippers. Ethan followed behind her.
She crouched over the two kids. Fern's face was literally blue. Ethan scooped her up gently and carried her up the stairs, trying to fight against the 60 mph winds.
Jane stared at her little boy. She knew she had to save him ASAP, but she couldn't help just staring at him. His tall, lean body caked in the snow. His messy, jet-black hair blown back by the wind and totally wet. His handsome, boyish face looking serene, but slightly disturbed.
Jane gave him a tiny peck on his nose. This guy was almost 130 pounds. No way could she lift him, when she was so short and round. “Wake up, baby,” she cooed.
Somewhere in Sam’s brain, the word “baby” triggered something in him. His arm twitched.
Daddy's got you...
I love you, little guy...
"Get up, kid, I'm gonna break my back if I carry you." Jane shook him wildly.
Slowly, his eyelids fluttered. "Fern," he choked.
"Fern is fine, in the warm house with Dad. Get up before you worry her." Really, it sickened Jane how attracted Sam was to Fern. But she had to live with it.
Sam obeyed his mother and slowly stumbled to his feet, leaning on Jane for support as they walked up the stairs. As Jane pushed the door open, warmth slammed Sam in the face, scorching through his icy veins. Slowly, his tight muscles began to relax. He had the sudden urge to fall on the ground and sleep for the rest of his life.
His fuzzy, distorted eyes detected Fern resting on a mattress in the middle of the family room. Ethan had covered her in thick, warm blankets and had put a heat pack on her forehead. He was wrapping paper towels soaked in scalding hot water around her feet and hands. Sam detected a flush of color in her cheeks. She was going to be fine.
He knelt down next to her. “Ferny?”
After a few seconds, she grumbled something that sounded like “Go away.”
Sam smiled. Oh, Fern. “Are you awake?”
She nodded slightly. A smile tugged at her lips.
“And…the baby?”
“Hmmmmm?” she moaned. He’d said it too quietly.
Sam placed a gentle, yet still not completely thawed hand on her belly. “Fern, the baby,” he whispered.
Fern’s eyes sprang open, and she lurched upwards. Sam jumped in shock.
“THE BABY!” Fern screeched. “OH, s*** !”
“W-w-what’s wrong?” Sam stuttered.
“He’s…he’s cold,” she mumbled. “Head rush.” She flopped back down on the pillow. “Is he…is he alive?”
Ethan was a doctor at the Reston Hospital and had been for the last seventeen years. He touched Fern’s stomach and concentrated. “I don’t know for sure,” he said at last. “He’s not moving, of course, but he’s too young. I have an x-ray upstairs in my room. I used it when Jane was pregnant with Sam, and the weather conditions were horrible and we wanted to be sure of Sam’s gender.” Ethan left the room and came back with a funky-looking machine and a tube of gel.
“This may feel a little cold,” Ethan said.
“Do it,” Fern whispered.
It’s okay, baby, she thought in her head. You’re going to be fine.
