Sam wanted someone to throw a brick at his head, slit his throat with a knife, submerge him in a tub of acid, stick a fork down his throat, pull out his eyeballs, and chop off all his fingers. He felt horrible. How could he have just MADE OUT WITH MAYA? Well, it’s not like he knew, but what was that AFTER he found out? Why did he want more? Why did it take a great deal of strength to pull away? Why did he throw a bag of Lego blocks at her? He felt guilty for that too.

“Sam?” Fern asked in a low voice, sensing that something was wrong.

“I need to talk to you,” he said in a low voice, pulling her by her wrist delicately upstairs to his room. Jane eyed him warily, remembering the time at the “union” when Sam had asked if he and Fern could “hang out” for a while in her room. She now knew the meaning of “hanging out”, in Sam’s dictionary.

“What’s wrong?” Fern demanded, clutching her belly as Sam locked the door.

He looked at her, so innocent and beautiful. Her stomach was so big – a stomach that contained his daughter. How could he tell Fern that he’d been minutes away from having sex with her crazy but insanely hot cousin in a basement with all the lights off? It would crush her. It would crush their relationship.

He would not tell her ever in her entire life.

“We…we need to think of some names for Sam Jr,” Sam blurted. “I mean, Samantha...Jr.”

Fern grinned. “I actually really, really like the name SAH-ra, spelled S-A-R-A. Do you remember that movie Midnight Ninja?”

“Oh yeah, we saw it when we were 12 at like 4 in the morning.” Sam smiled at the memory.

Fern LOVED “Midnight Ninja”. It was about a seemingly average, sexy 12th grader named, of course, Sara. She was secretly a ninja and fought crime in the city of Chicago. Fern wanted her daughter to be kickass, like Sara. (AUTHOR’S NOTE: MIDNIGHT NINJA IS NOT A REAL MOVIE.) And Sara really was a gorgeous name, meaning “princess”.

“Wow. Sara. I actually really, really like that name. Much more than my choice: Claire.” Sam snorted.

Fern thought for a minute. “How about…Sara Claire? Claire could be her middle name.”

“Sara Claire. I like it. A lot. You’re a genius.” Sam kissed her softly.

“And her last name is going to be Grant – which is your last name. You’re the dad, anyway.”

“Sara Claire Grant.” Sam had never heard a better name. As he kissed her again, all the horrible memories of Maya slowly trickled away.
