The entire universe seemed to stop spinning. Fern couldn’t breathe. Sam felt a creeping numbness spread over his body.

“A…girl?” he whispered.

Ethan smiled. “Fern’s going to have a little shopping companion later on, huh?”

Surprisingly, Fern was…happy. She realized she didn’t care whether he…oops, SHE, was a girl or a boy. That baby was hers and Sam’s for as long as she lived.

A little baby girl. Fern could imagine her in a little pink dress and matching bow and burst into tears of pure motherly joy.

“It’s…it’s okay, Fern.” Sam hugged her comfortingly. He felt pity for her, thinking she was crying out of sorrow.

“No, you freak.” Fern pushed him off gently and hiccupped. “I’m…so…freaking…happy.”

“You’re okay with it? Well, it’s not like we can change it,” Ethan said matter-of-factly.

“It doesn’t matter if she’s a boy or girl. All that matters is that she’s ours.” Fern tugged a bewildered Sam to her and smacked her lips onto his, feeling truly joyful for the first time in months. Sam felt elated. A girl? Well, that wasn’t so bad. Baby girls were cute. And Fern was right. He kissed her back feverishly, knotting his fingers in her hair as she clung to his neck.

Ethan cleared his throat and quietly walked away, offering them some privacy.

Many different things happened at once.

At that exact moment, Jane slipped in. The first thing she saw was Sam making out with Fern and she spat, “Sam.”

Sam felt something very much like electricity spark through him as he jumped away from Fern.

And then Fern gasped as she felt the tiniest nudge inside of her belly.
