The x-ray beeped steadily as Ethan concentrated on the screen, muttering to himself and moving some freaky wand-thingy over Fern’s belly. Fern clutched Sam’s hand. He kissed her cheek, keeping his lips at her face as he stared at the screen as well.

“Fern…” Ethan said at last.

Fern held her breath.

Ethan smiled. “Little baby Sam is going to be fine.”

“Oh, thank GOD!” Fern whispered. Sam quickly locked lips with her, remembered his dad was in the room, and reluctantly pulled away.

“See that little pulse?” Ethan pointed at the screen.

“Yeah?” Sam asked.

“That’s his heartbeat,” Ethan said.

Fern and Sam gazed in awe at their little baby right in front of them. Fern’s eyes filled up with tears. Her little Sam was beautiful. She could make out his little legs and arms.

Sam stroked the screen softly with his fingertips. His baby. A little mixture of him and Fern. He grinned, getting emotional. “That’s a sexy kid,” he told Fern. She snorted.

“Yeah, just like his dad,” she joked, touching Sam’s face. He blushed a little.

“Is it…it’s a boy, right, Dad?” Sam asked worriedly.

“I can’t tell just yet. He’s too young. Why do you want him to be a boy so bad?” Ethan wondered.

Fern shrugged. “Because he’s a tiny Sam.”

Ethan smiled proudly at his son. “I hope it’ll be a boy, too. I could teach him how to wrestle and take him to monster truck races.”

Sam rolled his eyes. “Sure, Dad.”

“Sam, it is your birthday. I’m going to go get you your gift.” Ethan winked.

“Dad, I already got the greatest gift in the world.” Sam gazed lovingly at the x-ray screen. “I got to see…him.”

“Well, you’re getting another one. Sit tight.” Ethan went into the other room. He came back with Jane and a big box with a bow on top.

“Ooh. I wonder what it is,” Fern said, a little too innocently.

“Yes, do open it,” Jane said, in the same tone. “What in the world could it be?”

“Baby Sam says ‘I totally don’t know what it is’,” Fern told Sam.

Sam smirked at Fern. “Tell Baby Sam to close his mouth and stop giving me attitude.” He carefully ripped open the wrapping paper of his present and pulled out a box with a silver Apple on it.

“Open, open, open,” Jane squealed. Ethan snapped pictures with his camera.

Sam took the lid off the box and stared.

Fern giggled excitedly.

“Holy crap,” he breathed.

“HAPPY BIRTHDAY!” everyone chorused.

“HOLY CRAP!” Sam yelled. Jane winced ever so slightly at his language, but decided to allow it, just for this one day. “YOU BOUGHT ME A MACBOOK AIR?”

“We all pitched in,” Fern said, grinning. “Even my parents. Even this little guy.” She patted her stomach.

Sam kissed Fern’s stomach and then Fern, a little more animatedly than necessary. Jane’s happy smile faded, and a stony expression stayed on her face even as he squeezed her and Ethan happily.

“This is freaking AWESOME,” he cried. “Thank you guys so, so, so, so, so much!”

Jane smiled hesitantly and left the room.
