After eating a delicious birthday breakfast of a chocolate frosted cupcake with a single candle in it (his parents seemed to have forgotten the pregnancy thing just for Sam's special day), he called Fern.

She didn't pick up.

He tried again. 13 times.

Fern was unconscious in the snow somewhere in the neighborhood on the road. She'd been there for ten minutes, and a layer of snow had covered her. She was almost invisible to the world around her.

Sam Jr. was in trouble. When Fern couldn't breathe, neither could he.

Sam was so attached to Fern and his son that he felt a spark inside of him. A weird, twisted feeling that they were in trouble.

"Oh, Fern," he sighed, grabbing his snowgear and venturing into the blizzard when his parents weren't looking.

Maya had just woken up in her bedroom. She looked out the window and saw some idiot covered in snowgear trekking down the road.

She opened the window. "I'm pretty sure the mail doesn't come today, you ass."

The wind drowned out her voice. The guy tripped, got up, dusted the snow off him, and continued his journey.

Maya laughed at his stupidity. Then, she heard him yell "FERN! FERN!"

Maya banged her head against the glass in shock.

"Fern? SAM! S***!" She dashed outside.

Unfortunately, by the time she'd gotten ready to go after him, (looking forward to some romantic moment when she could tumble into him and they could roll down the street in the soft snow. The glowing snow would light up her beautiful face and Sam would realize what he was missing and make love to her. On the street. In plain sight. In a blizzard. In -15 degree weather.) he'd disappeared around the corner.

He was crazy. Fern was probably warm in her house, cooing idiotically to her stupid baby. And he was going insane running around screaming for her like some kind of suckish rom-com movie.

Sam searched and searched until twenty minutes later, his foot nudged something soft buried in the snow. He dug and saw Fern's blue, frozen face.

"FERN!"

Fueled by adrenaline, he was able to carry her a few yards before he collapsed. He struggled but was determined.

Fern, the baby...

Fern, the baby...

His own voice echoed inside his head as he fought against the biting cold and lashing snow. The baby. He was cold. No, he was freezing.

HE WAS GOING TO DIE IF SAM DIDN'T MAKE IT IN TIME.

"C'mon, baby," Sam cooed. "Stay with me. I've got you. Daddy's got you."

Daddy's got you. His eyes welled with tears. His arms were full so he couldn't brush them away, so they continued rolling down his cheeks.

Fern. His little Fern. He didn't know if she was breathing. He didn't even know if he was carrying two corpses in his arms.

"Daddy's right here, baby," he panted breathlessly. "Daddy's right here."

He could hear. His son could hear him. He was only a month old, and Sam knew the ears didn't develop till much later. But he had a feeling that the baby knew its daddy was helping him to safety.

He could just barely identify his front steps now. He was at the end of his strength.

"I love you, little guy," Sam choked. "Forever."

And then he fell.
