  • Dedicated to My cousin: This is how I felt when I saw you for the first time...

Seeing Sara, in person, was like being blind your whole life and seeing the stars for the first time. Like roasting in the burning sun for three hours and submerging your body into a tub of cool water. Like doing vigorous exercise for three hours straight and then laying down on a soft bed.

In other words, it was heaven.

“Oh my God,” Fern and Sam breathed together.

“Congratulations, you two. Sara Grant is a very healthy, beautiful baby.” The nurse slipped a tiny white bundle into Sam’s surprised arms.

“Uh…” Sam had never really held a baby before, but he adjusted so that Sara was pressed against his chest. He very gently uncovered Sara’s face and sucked in a sharp breath.

Sara was beautiful. Her cheeks were puffy, her eyes closed, lined with soft black lashes. She wasn’t big, like Sam had predicted. He gazed at her adoringly. He couldn’t look away. He just couldn’t.

All of a sudden, his life didn’t matter anymore.

Sara’s did.

“Can I see her?” Fern asked eagerly.

There was nothing that sounded worse than giving Sara away, even to her own mother. But it wasn’t fair for Fern not to see her own daughter who she’d carried and cared for for the last 9 months. Sam reluctantly set Sara in Fern’s arms.

Fern was so happy, tears were already beginning to roll down her face. She sniffled loudly as she gazed at her adorable child. She’d never seen a more perfect, precious baby in her entire life.

The nurse gave Fern a little green pacifier. “You have to keep your finger in it while she sucks,” she said. “It’ll calm her down. And this one’s perfectly fit for a newborn’s mouth.”

Fern gently guided the pacifier into Sara’s tiny mouth and watched in awe and Sara sucked on it greedily. Sam was envious. “Is she asleep?”

“Yes. Newborns sleep for most of the day. Fern and Sam, you two need to stay at the hospital at least three days to learn how to care for your baby. Our team will teach you everything and will answer all your questions. Fern, right now you need to do something for Sara.”

“Anything,” Fern whispered, enchanted.

“You need to feed her.”

“With…with a bottle?” Sam was confused.

“No, with her breast. Breast milk is the healthiest food for a newborn, and it’s good for Sara’s physical and mental health as well.”

Fern stroked Sara’s face. It felt like touching silk. “How do I do it?”

The nurse helped Fern feed the baby, shooting Sam suspicious glances the whole time because, well, most 15 year old boys were total pervs when it came to boobs. But Sam was mature and watched Sara incredulously. The nurse was proud of him.

Breastfeeding felt…weird. Fern had to admit it. She’d never felt anything suck her breast before (she’d only been kissed there by Sam…God, the memory of it totally turned her on) but watching Sara clinging to her, gently drinking her milk, made her uber emotional.

She listened carefully to everything the nurse was saying, and when Sara was full, she gave out a tiny burp. The sound made Fern and Sam laugh.

“Good night,” the nurse said, after she was done helping Fern. She smiled at Sam and left the room.

“Ah, crap.” Sam looked at his phone. “Mom says I have to leave. Damn her. I can’t leave Sara.”

“Sara’s fine with me,” Fern assured him.

“Can I…hold her? Before I go?”

“Of course. I had her all this time and my arms hurt.”

Sam cradled Sara, rocking her back and forth, bouncing her a little, cooing senseless things to her. Fern was almost overcome by love for her new family.

When Sam left, with a final kiss to Sara, Fern gently held her, staring at nothing but her daughter. Suddenly, Sara stirred, yawning hugely. Fern giggled at her tiny mouth opening so widely. Then, Sara opened her eyes.

Fern gasped sharply.

Those were Sam’s wide, chocolate-brown eyes, copied directly into Sara’s perfect face.
