A week later, Jane found out. She couldn't move. Her body seemed to be totally incapable of moving.
Unexpectedly, huge, fat tears began to squeeze out of her eyes. Ethan gave her a hug. He was horrified by the news, too.
"Sam's going to be a father?" Jane squeaked, sobbing.
"It's okay," Ethan whispered.
"FERN!" Jane screeched, hot flashes of white-hot rage ripping through her veins. "FERN!"
"Jane, stop!"
Jane ignored her husband as she dashed through the front door and barreled to Fern's house. Sam was currently at a Math Club meeting at school (Yeah. A nerd, but hot.) She burst through their door.
"FERN!" Jane yelled. "YOU COME HERE, RIGHT THIS MINUTE!"
"Jane?" Ava whispered. "Jane, I urge you..."
Ethan had just arrived. "JANE, STOP. Do NOT take out your anger out on other people."
"FERN!" Jane screamed again.
Fern had shakily stumbled up to Jane. She'd been sitting behind the TV and crying. Her face was puffy and red.
Jane's eyes darted to Fern's stomach. It was totally flat.
She stabbed a finger at the poor girl. "YOU!"
"Jane, I am so sorry," Fern whispered.
"I just KNEW that you would find SOME way to soil my poor baby!" Jane cried.
Fern was actually mad now. She was a strong girl. "I've soiled him? He got me pregnant."
Jane saw red. "Oh, so you're going to blame this on SAM?"
Fern shrugged. "Pretty much. I love the guy, but he's the one who had se-"
"SHUT UP!" Jane yelled. "SHUT UP, YOU SLUT!"
Fern was stung, but she was just about to walk away when Fern's dad shot forward and got right into Jane's face.
"You...don't...ever...talk...to...my...daughter...that...way," he hissed through gritted teeth.
"I'm sorry, Jane, but we're going to have to ask you to leave now. You have no right to abuse my daughter as you just did. Please go," Ava said calmly.
Ava's words had more effect on Jane. She shot Fern one last menacing glare as Ethan dragged her out of there.
"Fern," she growled.
Fern wiggled her fingers. "Ta-ta," she mouthed.
