“HE KICKED ME!” Fern screamed.

Sam all but forgot his mom was watching and turned to Fern. “Who? Who kicked you?” His defensive-boyfriend instincts were blaring. If anyone even TOUCHED Fern, much less KICKED her…

“Oh, sorry. SHE kicked me. Inside.” She touched her stomach.

Jane watched with raised eyebrows as Sam’s entire face melted with pure love and happiness, matching Fern’s. They both gazed down lovingly at Fern’s bulging belly.

“Why’d you kick your mommy?” Sam asked softly. Fern chuckled.

Jane felt slightly guilty watching them, as if she was trying to ruin her son’s life. She knew he was happy – more happier than he’d been in a long time.

But he would be happier with Maya. Sure, maybe the last time those two had dated it didn’t work out so well. But they could always try again. Jane would make sure that they did.

She walked upstairs to her bedroom to change her clothes and found Ethan there, looking as if he was waiting for her.

“Stop whatever you’re doing, Jane,” he said.

Jane automatically stopped walking, because that was the only the thing she was doing at the moment.

“I mean, stop trying to break them apart. It will never, ever work.”

Jane gaped.

“Sam may be fragile and soft, like me. But he has your mind – strong. Determined. Sam will not leave Fern, not when she’s in this state. You and I have raised him to always do good things. Leaving his pregnant girlfriend to scamper around with some Barbie doll? Is that good?”

“Maya is a very, very sweet girl. She has amazing manners and only the best intentions,” Jane sniffed. “I am being a good mother by trying to…”

“Tear him away from the love of his life to date someone he hates just for your satisfaction?”

Jane froze. Ethan never talked like that.

“He does NOT hate her. Ethan, you are out of your mind.”

“But he loves you. If he did not hate her, wouldn’t her date her to make you happy?”

“Ethan, stop. I am his mother and I know what’s best for him.” Jane raised his chin high in the air and stalked towards the closet, shutting the door.

“Of course you do. But just remember, with every little thing you do to break him up with Fern, a piece of him crumbles. It won’t be long before he’s nothing but a pile of rubble.”

Jane pretended not to hear him. She also pretended to ignore the tears in her eyes.
