I burst open the door to Dark's house and dragged Mark inside. I shoved him forward and slammed the door behind us. I bent over and tried to catch my breath as he leaned against the wall. I heard him swallow roughly and then he spoke.
"Y/N- His library, I-I think it's in the basement.. I think." he said between huffs and I looked up at him, determination now taking over my mind besides the uncertainty in Mark's voice. I could catch my breath later, right? I stood up straight and rushed down the hall, turning the corner sharply. I heard Mark groan out but soon enough, I heard his footsteps behind me. I went through the kitchen and ended up in another hallway. Yes, I'd been down this hallway before, but I only used the bathroom so that was one door out of the four that lined its walls. I turned around and gave Mark a questioning look. He raised an eyebrow at me as he came closer and I watched his eyes flicker from each door to the next.
"From what I remember, I think it's the last one on the right." he said warily, furrowing his eyebrows. I looked at him for a second and then shrugged.
"It doesn't hurt to look." I said, and made my way over to the door. I turned the knob, and it didn't budge. My eyes widened and I yanked on it with more strength this time. Thankfully, the knob turned and the door creaked loudly as I pushed it open. Dark must have not been down here in awhile considering the condition the knob was in from no one turning it in so long. I looked behind me and there was Mark, nodding me ahead. I swallowed and a small smile made its way to my lips. I turned back to the pitch blackness beyond the door and took out my phone from my back pocket and turned on the flashlight. A whole staircase leading downwards was then displayed in front of us and I let out a sigh of relief. I took one step down and then another, and another. Mark was right behind me and soon enough we were at the bottom. I had found an old light switch and turned it on. A lightbulb above us flickered for a moment and looked as though it was going to go out, but it soon lit all the way up. We looked forward and saw plain, concrete walls before us and that's pretty much it. I sighed and put my phone back in my back pocket. Just a normal unfinished basement. I felt Mark nudge me and I looked at him. He was pointing off to the left and I looked at the area where he was pointing. To my surprise, there was a long, dark hallway leading away from us. I gave him a look and he shrugged, a small smile playing on his lips.
"It doesn't hurt to look." he said, referencing what I said before and I grinned.
"No, it's doesn't. Let's go." I said confidently, pulling my phone out once again and lighting the way for us.
Pretty soon, we had grown tired of walking and it seemed like this hallway was never going to end. Mark was huffing and puffing again and I could barely keep my breathing stable either.
"We aren't getting anywhere, Mark." I said, obviously aggravated. He turned to look at me and his look made me feel like he was genuinely sorry that we hadn't gotten anywhere.
"I don't know why we haven't come across anything yet. This is ridiculous, I know he's got to have something down here." Mark said, squinting his eyes. I sighed and kept up my pace, not wanting to stop in case something actually showed up. Suddenly, Mark stopped walking and held me back. I moved my phone's flashlight around and it fell upon two grand doors with fancy designs carved into them. I don't think I've ever felt more relieved in my life. I looked at Mark and he was smirking.
"Exactly what I thought I saw. C'mon." he said as he grabbed my arm and rushed me up towards the huge doors. He reached for the extravagantly-made door handles and yanked as hard as he could. My hopes were then brought down when we heard a clicking sound and noticed that these doors were for-sure locked. I brought a hand up to my forehead and wiped away a trail of sweat that had gathered there.
"God, this is so frustrating." I admitted as I gave the doors a hard look. Something's got to unlock these doors, they can't just be locked forever. And they definitely lead somewhere, whether it's the library where we can find the supposed spell book to get us to Dark or some other place. I watched as Mark looked around, then he reached for my phone and flashed the light everywhere around the set of doors.
"Aha! Found you!" he called out, and I became curious as to what he found.
"A key to the doors? Right next to them?" I asked as he turned around to face me. A huge smile was on his face and he shook his head.
"Nope, even better. A lever. We're going to have to solve a puzzle to get through." he said excitedly, and I just sighed in disgust.
"At least you're good at solving puzzles. Otherwise, we'd be fucked." I said truthfully while letting out a small laugh. He just shook his head slightly and handed me back my phone, and told me to point the light at the lever that I now noticed on the wall beside the grand doors. I did as I was told and Mark carefully pulled it downwards. There was a louder clicking sound and two panels opened up beside the lever and a tablet with six blocks was slid out slowly. I watched Mark's eyes light up with fascination and I just smiled at how much of a dork he was being. He reached for the tablet with one hand, and with the other, he gestured for me to shine the light on the tablet of blocks, so I did. On the blocks were the first six zodiac signs, one sign for each block. The first six zodiac signs were Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, and Virgo so those were the signs on the blocks. I knew what they were and I knew that it depended on your birthday to see what sign you were, but I was confused as to why those six signs were on blocks and why zodiac signs were a part of the puzzle. Apparently, Mark knew just what needed to be done because he had the biggest smirk playing in his lips.
"Y/N, what's my birthday?" he said as he turned to look at me with that same smirk still on his lips. I furrowed my eyebrows.
"June 28th, why?" I asked, obviously wanting to know why his birthday had anything to do with this. He just chuckled.
"Dark has the same birthday as me since he's just a darker side of who I am. If my birthday makes me a Cancer, then it makes him a Cancer, too." he said, and it all made sense. My eyes widened.
"Oh my God.. of course! Shit, press the Cancer block in!" I said hurriedly and Mark just grinned widely as he turned around and pressed the block with Cancer on it in, and sure enough, our assumption was correct. The tablet starting glowing a light yellow color and we turned to hear the same big clicking sound from the two grand doors. I grabbed Mark's hand and dragged him towards them and shoved him at them. He steadied himself and grabbed ahold of the handles once more, yanking on them and they opened, thank God. I was so happy that the doors opened that I didn't notice Mark suddenly calling out my name until he had already fallen into the abyss of black and green colors that was on the other side of the doors. I saw white mists whipping past Mark as he fell and I heard screams but they weren't Mark's, it's like there were other people falling but it was only him that I saw, at least, in full human form. Before I could even get my thoughts straight about what had happened in the past five seconds, I was falling into the abyss as well, following Mark, and that's the last thing I remember.
