Evelyn

"Morning, Evie!" A distinct voice yelled from behind the door. Whoever thought it was smart idea to wake me up on Saturday morning was an absolute imbecile and was about to die.

"Evie, open up. It's Hayden!" I covered my ears with my pillow to block out any noise coming out of Hayden's mouth. The knocking got louder and so did my anger.

"Go away, Hayden!"

"I'm going into town today to pick up some books, and I was wondering if you'd like to come."

"Book shopping?" The word 'books' was the only things that got my attention.

"Yes. Would you like to come?"

"Give me half an hour."

I finally built up the stamina to get out of bed and get ready for the adventure Hayden had planned. After brushing my teeth and hair, I pulled on a pair of dark blue jeans, a grey cable knit sweater and my worn out Converse. I stepped out of my room and was about to turn around after unlocking my door but a hand covered my eyes making me shriek.

"Hayden, I swear if it's you I will slap you, " I threatened, my pulse quickening as I spoke. Suddenly, the hands were removed from eyes, returning my sight back to me. I turned around to see who the culprit was and I wasn't at all surprised.

"I'm sorry, Angel." I glared at him and he mirrored my action in a mocking manner. Rolling my eyes, I walked away from him and towards the car park where Hayden would probably be waiting. Just as I had predicted, Hayden was resting against his car whilst tapping away on his phone. I stormed over to him to confront about inviting Rowan on this trip without telling me. If he would've told me then I wouldn't have came.

"Hayden Carter!"

"Evelyn Lawson! How may I be of assistance to you?" He turned his phone off and slid it into his pocket, not breaking his eye contact with me.

"You invited your infuriating best friend!"

"I wouldn't exactly call you infuriating, Evie. Closed off? Yes. Infuriating? No," he commented, looking very confused as to why I was being negative about myself.

"I'm not talking about me, Hayden - although I am touched that you've already upgraded me to best friend status - I'm talking about Rowan."

"Oh. Evie, Rowan's been my best friend since we were four, he goes everywhere I go. I'm sorry I didn't tell you prior to us leaving but I kind of assumed you'd realise."

"It's okay as long as he doesn't bother me."

The car ride was full of Hayden and Rowan singing along to a cheesy song on a random radio station. I sat in the back, questioning my choice to get out of bed and go shopping with the two pop stars at the front. After Hayden had parked the car we all got out and headed towards the location of the book store. I needed a new book to read to keep me preoccupied when I had nothing else but free time on my hands.

Hayden vanished into the section for textbooks whilst I sauntered off into the young adult section. I loved coming to a book store; my mother used to own one. Different stories with different perspectives to the others brought the store alive. It was my piece of heaven. My escape.

"What're we searching for, Angel? Rowan said, his warmth radiating off his body and touching mine. I shrugged my shoulders in a nonchalant manner before wandering off. I saw the area for fantasy novels and scanned my finger along the spine of all the books in the section looking for a title that caught my eye. I picked up Red Queen and immediately turned to the back to read the blurb. My mind was locked into buying this book after that blurb and there was nothing that was going to change it. I kept the book under my arm as I searched for some more.
