Evelyn

"I sincerely apologise for the sheer bravery of Rowan for pursuing someone he actually loves, Evie. You did try your hardest but I think he realised who is right for him and who's just a waste of time," Avery snickered, looking smug at all the chaos she had caused.

"Do you know how I realised you're truly evil, Avery?" I asked. The look of horror on her face as I asked her that question lightened my heart a tad but there were still many weights that needed to be lifted before I felt normal. "I know you're evil because you had the audacity to tarnish something that was beautifully blooming. You ripped my relationship apart just as it was about to reach it's high point. "

"Well, you ruined my attempt at forgiveness so I think we're even, Evelyn."

"I've never truly hated anyone in my entire life but, Avery Clark, you'll be pleased to know that you've gained my hatred. Congratulations," my tone was full of disdain and the atmosphere turned suffocating and unforgiving. It was amusing how two people who had no reason to hate each other suddenly decided to because of a middle man. The middle man in this story was Rowan.

"Thanks for putting me in such an honourable position. I'm truly touched, Evelyn," she scorned. "I'm so touched that I don't think I want to sleep here today. Night, Lawson."

I remained unresponsive as she sauntered out of the room, obviously quite satisfied at all the disturbances she had caused today. Life was unfair but that was nothing new to me but sometimes the unfairness wasn't irrevocable. An hour ago, I saw Rowan down the hall but when he noticed me he immediately traced back his steps, trying to get as far away from me as possible.

I gave him a heap of pain, I knew that, but I also wanted to rectify my mistake. I didn't have any special powers of persuasion or a secret potion, but I did have my growing love for him. As long as that shone through I could only hope that Rowan would listen to me.

I messed up because the sight I saw blurred the thick lines of trust I had for Rowan. The scene of the two of them locked in an intimate embrace harshly shook me away from my sane mind and made me look at the incident in an illogical way.

Rowan would never cheat on me. The Rowan I knew and loved would never ever cheat on anyone.

I hastily checked my watch to see what time it was and it was perfect. Every day at half past eight Rowan would go on a stroll around campus just to get some extra fresh air. It was twenty-seven past eight right now, so I rapidly put on some boots and went down the stairs towards the path Rowan liked to walk on.

He used to say that the serenity of the place brought him peace and allowed him to release all the stress he had stored from the beginning of the day.

He was there. He was leaning against the tree with his phone in his hand and earphones in his ears. I slowly approached him when I noticed the bandaged hand. Stupid boy. He had this tendency to punch walls when he was annoyed or angry to get rid of all the anger, and I think he went a bit overboard today.

Suddenly, a leaf crunched under my foot and alerted his attention. How can you hear with earphones in? His calm expression immediately transitioned into one of annoyance and tiredness. Rowan took a step in my direction and that was enough to keep frozen in place.

Another step closer.

Another step closer.

Another step closer.

He was close enough for me to stick my hand out and touch him, yet he didn't look at me but beyond me. He took a step away from me. Subconsciously I grabbed the back of his hand to stop him from moving but it was roughly yanked out of my hand as he kept on walking.
