Evelyn

"Stupid bastard's been ruining my life ever since I stepped foot in Ashby." I dumped my suitcase onto my bed and crashed onto it soon after. All those fairy-tale moments that we went through during those six months together all vanished as soon as my fist collided with his face. The hopes and dreams that I had once conjured up quickly transformed into bitterness and a quick shot of reality was thrown at my face.

Just with a punch everything went away.

All that love that I chucked at that relationship came back to me damaged and torn apart. I laughed at myself and shook my head at my stupidity. Did I actually believe I was in love with someone I was only dating for six months? I felt like my soul and my heart were being pulled apart forcefully by two forces of nature that you didn't want to be reckoned with.

"Ms. Evie, may I come in?" I sat up straight when I heard the voice and allowed them to come in. It was Elliot.

"Elliot, I've told you before that you can just call me by my name." He bowed in apology and that's when I realised that no matter what I said to him he would still be using formalities whilst talking to me.

"Mr. Colin told me to ask you if you were alright."

"You can tell my dad that I'm perfectly fine." He bowed towards me once more and was just about to leave before I stopped him again. "Elliot, have you ever been in love?" He slowly turned around, his gaze directed towards the floor and then he slowly nodded.

"It was quite a few years ago when that love was broken."

"How did you feel when you were in love?" My back hit my bed again as I faced my ceiling whilst talking to Elliot. He tentatively took a seat on the edge of my bed and let out a loud and emotional sigh.

"I can't explain the feeling but I can tell you that it's over in a blink of an eye if you're not careful. The entire time I was dating this one girl all I could think was that I should be a bit more cautious unless something bad happened but my heart erased any mindful thoughts I was having and just told me to experience love as best as I could. And I did but it's the most imperfect thing there will ever be.

"It's like being outside, love is. You never know when it'll rain or if a forceful wind will blow but there will be signs leading up to the penultimate step. Love is unpredictable just like the weather but there will always be signs telling you that you're falling in love, and by the time you realise it you would already have fallen into the trap. " A meaningful pause surrounded us both and the only thing I could hear was the sound of our breathing.

"Did it ever hurt you?"

"All the damn time. She meant the world to me and more but all I was to her was another pawn on her chessboard. The best decision I made was when I decided to leave her but the fact that every moment we spent together will only be engraved in my mind and not hers because she doesn't care pains me the most."

"I'm sorry that you didn't get who you deserved it."

"Same to you, Ms. Evie."

"Thank you for sharing that with me, Elliot."

"Anything for you, Ms. Evie."

Elliot soon after left my room, once again leaving me all by myself with only my pessimistic thoughts to keep me company.

"Evie, you're awake!" I was walking down the stairs to get something to eat when Dad yelled my name.

"I was hungry."

"Well you did go to sleep without dinner. Ask Elliot if there's anything you want him to make you." I nodded and carried on walking towards the kitchen. Elliot was busy pouring flour into a bowl and cracking eggs. I knocked on the wall before entering and he immediately stopped what he was doing and bowed towards me.
