We followed the noise along the river. I was sure it was a girl. The trees didn't bother us, so we were quick. We found the source. It was a girl. She was about my age. She had long blond hair, and deep blue eyes, like mine. She had a fair complexion. I couldn't help but staring her. She was beautiful. Then I saw what all the noise was about. She was fighting what looked like three skeletons... with swords. They had glowing red eyes. They managed to block her every swing.
''Well, go help her, loverboy,'' interrupted my grandfather.
''Huh, what? Oh yeah!'' I said, further making myself look like an idiot. ''What about you?''
''Consider it a test. Remember what I said.'' I sighed, but felt kind of happy that it was just me saving her. I ran into the fight, blocking a swing from a skeleton.
''Need some help?'' I asked.
''It would be very much appreciated!'' She said, smiling. Even her voice sounded beautiful. I blocked another swing and swung, but of course, it blocked it.
''Soooo, what's up?'' I said, trying to start a conversation.
''What's it look like?'' She replied.
''How'd you get stuck with these guys?''
''They just appeared out of nowhere. I'd prefer that they got stuck with me. We fought some more. Then I realized something.
''Hey, you distract them. I'll sneak up from behind.''
''I don't take orders.''
''Please?''
''Fine. Why?''
''I've got an idea!'' She distracted them, pulling out two small blades, knives, and throwing them at two of the skeletons. Of course, it did nothing, but it got their attention. They swarmed on her. I then went up from behind and blasted them in the back with magic. The skeletons crumbled and their bones flew away a few feet.
''Whoa! Nice job with the magic!'' She said.
''Thanks. You're a pretty good fighter yourself.''
''I didn't get your name?''
''Nicholas, Nicholas Drake.''
''Mine's Elizabeth Storm.'' Elizabeth Storm. A wonderful name.
''Nice name.'' I know, terrible. But it was all I could think of saying.
''Thank-you. That's nice!'' Ok, so I didn't completely screw up. But our celebration was too soon. We heard the rattle of bones.
''Oh goddess...'' Sure enough, the bones rose up, mending themselves, coming back together.
''Here we go again...'' Said Elizabeth. The battle continued. Every time we managed to make them fall apart, they came back together. It seemed to last for hours. Then Elizabeth spoke.
''This time I've got an idea!''
''What?''
''Y'know the river, right.''
''Umm, yeah.''
''We make them fall apart, then we throw the bones in the river. They'll wash away. Then, even if they do reform, it'll be far from us!''
''Brilliant!'' We lured the skeletons to the river. Then I distracted and she broke them with her sword. Talk about being stabbed in the back! We then threw the bones in the river. We watched as they washed away along the river.
''Wow! Great idea!"'' I said.
''Thanks!''
''Now I wonder where my grandfather is...''
''Grandfather?'' At that he appeared out of the bushes, clapping.
''Good job, both of you. Great ideas!''
''Elizabeth, this is my grandfather, Alexander.'' She bowed down to him.
''Your grandson saved my life, sir. I don't know what I would have done had he not been there. I thank both of you greatly.''
''No need to, young lady. Might I ask what you are doing here?''
''I live here. Might I ask you the same question?''
''We were just travelling through the area.'' He replied.
''No one just travels through the Old Forest,'' Elizabeth said suspiciously.
''We have nothing to hide from you, young Elizabeth. But I'm sure you and Nicholas can talk about things later this evening, if you'd like to join us.'' She seemed to think about this.
''I would love to!''
''Excellent!'' Said my grandfather, clapping his hands together and smiling. ''It is getting close to dark. We must get going!''
And that is how I met Elizabeth Drake, our newest companion and my later best friend!
