The last song to play before we park in my grandmothers driveway, is "Not on Drugs". One of my favorite songs by Tove Lo. I smile to myself when the song plays. I mouth the words and open my eyes. Dani drives up the driveway and parks the car by the house.
The house is a an old brick, farmhouse. It was built in 1881. I always tell my grandma she can't die until I can buy the house, and if she dies before then, she has to write me into her will. She always laughs at me and tells me she'll try not to die. She's not even seventy yet, same goes for grandpa. They're both 68 years old, only three days apart.
Dani parks the car and takes the keys out. I open my door and grab my phone. I step out and move the seat so Jason can get out too. He jumps out and shuts the door, leaving the seat down so he can get back there when we leave. Hopefully we aren't here too long, I'm not a big fan of family reunions.
Dani starts walking up to the house and Jason and I follow behind her. She's already opening the door before were on the porch. I think she missed everyone, she's acting like it's been years since we've seen them. I know she's texted mom, and grandma is pretty high up there in the technological world.
Mom runs to the door after Dani opens it. She grabs Dani and hugs her, she looks like she's suffocating her. She opens her eyes and smiles at her. She looks at me and Jason. I didn't think it was possible, but mom looked even happier. Anne runs out, from the computer room I assume. Jason and I step up to the porch and mom embraces us. Anne is yelling and giddy. She missed us, I think it's been about a week since we've seen her.
She notices me and her face lights up. Mom told me she missed me, but I really thought she was just trying to make me feel better. She runs up to me and jumps into my arms. I laugh and stumble before I get my balance back. She has her legs wrapped around me and I can barely breath, I'm laughing so hard and she's squeezing me so tight. Everyone is laughing and smiling.
Grandma and grandpa walk out onto to the porch and smile at us all. Dani gives them each a hug and starts a conversation with grandpa. Grandma smiles at Jason and opens her arms, waiting for him to give her a hug. I told him they wanted to see him. Anne is still holding on to me when I walk over to give each of them a hug. Everyone is happy and talking. Anne finally lets go and allows me to put her down.
"You're still my favorite sister." She whispers in my ear.
"I better be!" I grab her hands and whisper back.
She wraps her arms around my waist and just stands there while we talk. Jason walks over and taps her on the shoulder. I don't think she noticed him before. She looked back over her shoulder, still holding on to me. She freaked out, almost like she was meeting her celebrity crush. She let go of me and greeted him exactly as she greeted me.
He holds her like I did, and we start a conversation about the party tonight. Mom seems interested, grandma seems genuinely happy, and grandpa looks tired. Normal, everyone is acting like they always do.
"Is there any food?" I ask.
"Didn't you eat girl?" Grandma laughs.
"Nope, I was woke up by this asshole!" I gesture to Jason. "Then I took a long shower and had to get myself ready and help Chloe."
"Come one, there's some bacon left. Maybe grandpa can cook up some more eggs." She volunteers grandpa to do everything.
Grandpa rolls his eyes and smiles at her. We all walk into the house and walk through the the living room. Modern Family reruns are playing. We keep walking through the the bright living room to get to the kitchen. All the windows flood in tons of light through the see though curtains. They aren't there for anything but looks.
