I woke up to find Geoffrey in the kitchen.

"Aw, are you cooking for me?", I asked.

"Girl, please." He gestured towards the microwave. "This is a Jimmy Dean Sausage bowl."

I laughed. "Well, toss one in there for me too please. I have to get to work."

"Do you have to go?", whined Geoffrey.

"Well, this is my apartment. I wanna pay for some of it. I'm still not happy with you doing all the work."

"But I'm okay with it, Ava. Take a sick day or something."

"Geoffrey..."

"Fine.", he reluctantly put the plastic bowl in the microwave and punched in the numbers.

"I'll be back early though..."

"How early?"

"About three-ish."

He looked at the time. It was almost eight. "Alright. As long as your back before seven."

"Why seven?", I asked.

"'Cause I was hoping we could reschedule our little date night for tonight."

I smiled. "Sounds good."

He handed me my food and gave me a wink. "So it's a date."

After Geoffrey and I said our goodbyes I got in my car and turned the stereo up loud. It was sort of like my release. This past week has been so hectic.

I sighed as I began to drive and thought about the day I had ahead of me. I had work and I had to try and do some of my homework after work. Plus, I couldn't find my English notebook.

I turned the radio up even louder when one of my favorite songs came on: "Mi Manera" by Leslie Grace. I loved that song because it made me feel so free and like I was in control of my own life. I continued to drive as I sung the lyrics out loud.

"Yo bailo cuando yo quiera

Yo canto cuando yo quiera

Yo lloro cuando yo quiera..."

Like who cares what people think of me? It's my life and imma do what I want.

"Y yo la pienso vivir a mi manera..."

Finally, i arrived at the little coffee shop that I called my job. I punched in at work and put on my apron. I prepped everything for the first customers of the day. We always had a rush in the morning.

"Avadele, you're shift is over for today. Antonio's shift is now.", said my boss, Lisa, as she gestured to the guy who worked the shift after mine.

"Thanks Lisa.", I said, taking a coffee cake and leaving the sufficient amount to pay for it in the cash register. "See you next Saturday, then? I'm gonna sit at one of the tables for a little and try and get some of this homework done."

"Yeah, sure. I understand you have all that schoolwork to catch up on."

I thanked her again and sat down with my bag in one if the tables that were in the back corner by the window.

I sighed. I really wanted to try and get my English homework done but without my notebook it was a lost cause. I took out a history textbook instead and began to answer the questions on the passage we were to read.

I had finished my history work and was about to move on to geometry when a heard a familiar voice.

"Ava?"

I looked up and saw Bryan. He gave a smile once he saw I noticed him.

"Fancy seeing you here.", he said.

"Actually I work here.", I laughed. "My shift just ended and I'm just staying here for a bit to try and get some work done."

"Oh, that's cool I guess." He nodded to the empty seat to the left of me. "So, is that seat taken or...?"

"Oh, no." I pulled the chair out and motioned for him to sit down. "It's packed in here anyway. It's no problem."

"Great." He set his iced coffee down and sat down next to me. "So what are you working on?"

"Geometry.", I groaned.

"Ew, that sucks.", he stated. "Oh, I almost forgot. Ill be right back." He ran out of the shop.

When he returned he tossed a notebook on the table. "You left this in my car the other day. I found it yesterday when I was cleaning it out."

I read the words written in permanent marker on the cover of the notebook. It was my English book. "Oh, thanks. I've been looking for this.", I told him.

"Yeah, I was gonna give it to you tomorrow but I didn't wanna come to your place and have your boyfriend beat me up or something."

"Yeah, he has a habit of doing that...", I muttered under my breath.

"What?", asked Bryan.

"Oh, nothing.", I said quickly.

"Alright then...but yeah, I didn't want him gettin' mad or nothing so I was gonna give it to you at school."

"Well, now you don't gotta worry about it.", I said.

He laughed. "Guess not."

The rest of the time we joked and talked. But I couldn't help but notice that almost every time he looked at me there was something in his eyes....something in his eyes that reminded me of trouble.
