I laid in the hospital bed, wide awake. I was so tired but I didn't think I'd be able to get to sleep anytime soon. Too many thoughts were rushing through my head.
A few hours ago, I had Alexiel. Now, he was sound asleep in those little crib type things that they have next to your bed. It was 8:30 now. I had officially been a mother for a little over three hours.
I heard a knock on my door and. Few minutes later a nurse entered. "Miss Mata?"
I sat up. "Yes?"
"You have a few visitors. Are you feeling well enough for me to let them in?"
Why not? "Sure."
The nurse left and returned a bit later with Rachel by her side.
She gave me an excited look once she walked in. "So, where is my god son?"
I smiled and nodded my head over to where he was sleeping. "Right over here."
She went over to Alexiel's crib and looked at him through the glass. "He's beautiful."! She said with a smile.
"Thanks."
She stood upright and looked around for a moment. "So where's his principe of a father?", she asked, referring to Geoffrey.
"He, uh... couldn't make it.", I said. A lump was forming in my throat. I hadn't forgotten about it until now.
"Oh..." she sat at the foot of the bed. "So, how was it?", she asked, changing the subject.
"Painful." I proceeded to tell her how the whole day went.
She left a few minutes later to make room for the next visitor. The hospital had this stupid visitor policy of one visitor at a time. The next to arrive was Christiana.
We talked about the baby for a bit an she gave me little tips of advice, which I really appreciated.
"Hopefully, he doesn't keep you up all night.", She said.
"Hey, well it's a give and take process.", I replied.
She nodded. "Mhmm. Rewarding yet draining.
I thought for a moment as we sat in silence.
"Hey, uh, Christina?"
"Yeah?"
"I just wanna thank you for let in me stay with you all this time."
"It's not a problem, Ava. You can stay as long as you need", she told me.
"That's the thing... you've been so loving to me and all, but I think it's time for me to go. It's not fair if this baby keeps you and Annabelle up and all..."
She nodded understandingly. "So, your moving out?"
"Yeah... I think I am."
She stood and placed a hand on my arm. "I understand, Ava. But you're welcome to come back anytime. You're like a sister to me. Keep in touch."
After she left, I realized something. Where did I have to go? I didn't exactly know at the moment but I was sure I'd figure it out.
My next and final visitor was Bryan. He walked in quietly and he looked really tired.
"Hey. How'd it all go?", he asked me, coming over to see the baby.
"Fine.", I said. "Just a little tired."
"Well, I'm glad everything went well, Ava. I'm proud of you."
I smiled. "Thanks. I'm proud of you for keeping your cool even though I was yelling at you like crazy."
He laughed softly. "It's cool, Ava. I knew I had to do what had to get done."
"Well, thank you for that."
"You're welcome,-", he stopped and listened to the noise outside of the room for a minute.
"What's going on out there?", I asked.
"Yo no Sé. But I'm about to check it out."
*Bryan's POV*
"You gotta let me in. I'm the father!"
"I'm sorry, Mr. Rojas. But there's a limit to three visitors per room. Plus, you can't prove you're the father."
I was surprised when I came out in the hallway to find Prince Royce arguing with a nurse. He was about to start arguing again when he noticed me.
"Bryan?... Bryan! Hold on, he knows who I am!", he turned to me. "Tell them that I'm Alexiel's father...please."
Even though I didn't want to, I turned to the nurse and nodded. "Yeah, he is."
She sighed. "Even so, there's still the three visitors limit. And you're the last visitor.", She said looking at me.
I sighed and looked over at Prince Royce, who was looking defeated. I really wanted to stay with Ava but I had to do what was right.
"Oh alright. I understand." He turned around and started to walk away.
I was torn and didn't know what to do. "Wait!", I called.
He turned back around and there was a hint of hope in his voice. "Yeah?"
I gestured to Ava's door. "Just go in. Take my place.", I told him. "That's okay, right?", I asked the nurse.
She looked as if she was going to protest but change her mind. "I suppose... you can see her, Mr. Rojas."
Prince Royce's face spread into a wide grin. "Really?"
She nodded. "Really."
He looked at me. "I can't begin to thank you enough, man." He shook my hand excitedly and said thanks another time before going off to see Ava.
I gave a long sigh before turning around to leave.
I was doing this for Ava, I thought to myself. I was trying to convince myself that I was doing this for a good cause.
If I hadn't told Prince Royce to go see her at the party all those months ago we would've never even been in this situation.
As much as I cared about Ava and as hard as I fell for her, I just had to let him see her. I couldn't just let him stand there. I couldn't hate him anymore.
Damn, Bryan, why'd you always have to go and be the good guy?
'Cause you love her, that's why.
