Taking in deep breaths I thought about something that would keep me calm, my wife and Mary Katherine.
"Babe?" My wife's small voice sounded somewhat distorted, like I was having some sort of episode of sorts.
"Wha-What?" I say trying to focus.
"Babe," she repeated, "Are you ok?"
I relaxed closing my eyes for a second searching myself for the answer.
'I'm not going to let my father scare me into an abuse pattern.' I thought when I opened my eyes smiling.
"Yeah." I say feeling much better, "I'm sorry I yelled at you earlier."
She smiled touching my cheek.
"It's ok." She promised.
"You sure?" I say.
"Sure." She says tilting her head to the side.
"What?" I say laughing.
"Nothing." She says smiling back. She tucked a fly away strand of her hair behind her ear when she came to hug me, "Whatever's wrong, we'll get through it together."
"Good idea." I say, "What's wrong?"
"Thinkin'." She says.
"About???" I say.
"Work." She says.
"Paramedic?" I say.
"You guessed it." She says.
"Keep thinkin'." I say, "You have
time."
"Not really." She says.
"Who told you that joke??" I say.
"My boss." She says.
"Don't let him get you down. He just doesn't want to lose you to a good company." I say, "Do whatever makes you happy and nothing else."
"What about us??" She says.
"We'll compromise the rest of the way." I say.
