As soon as I'm home I rush up the stairs and into my room. I find the diary under my pillow right where I left it. As soon as I open it a note falls out.

I flip to page one twenty as fast as I can. It looks like there's a letter she wrote.

Dear Koichi,

Honestly I don't know where to begin. I've kept a secret from you for so long and could never bring myself to tell you. I'm sorry for all the lies and excuses I've made to keep it from you, and I hope you can forgive me.

I'm dying Koichi.

I can't believe what I'm reading.

Back when we were younger the doctor first diagnosed me with cancer. It's gotten bad enough to where this year was my last year to live. This is why our parents were crying that day. This is why your mom always worries about me. Koichi honestly I wanted to tell you but I wouldn't be able to watch you in pain. Koichi I love you and I hope you understand. You've given me the best last few months of my life and for that I am thankful. You have so much more to live for so please don't stop because of me. By the time you read this I'll probably be dead. I'm so sorry. I love you Koichi.

I run out of the house and down the street to her house. I bang in her door until her father opens it.

"Where's Mitzuko?"
