As my senses came back to me, I felt warmth. Not too hot, but comfortable warmth. I almost wanted to drift back to sleep. I could feel my head lying on something hard, and as I slowly opened my eyes I saw that it was a road. My body ached, but I could see that I wasn’t injured, except for maybe a bruise here and there. Slowly I sat up, my head ringing, trying to steady itself. “Ug,” I mumbled. When I finally started to look around, my eyes widened. I wondered if what I was observing was actually real. I pinched myself to be sure. This is real all right.

It, wherever that could be, was dark, almost like it was night, but somehow it didn’t feel like it. The sky appeared to be filled with dark clouds, and very little light was shimmering through. Many very tall skyscrapers that all looked similar circled me. Most of the structures were rectangular or square, and the outside of every building was covered in tinted glass windows, so that they all appeared to be a luminous black. The road was also black, except for some kind of light beneath the surface that glowed through, in place of painted white lines. These glowing lines looked like clear tracks, embedded in the pavement, that were filled with a glowing light blue liquid.

I looked back to Aris wondering what she would think of all this. I walked over and shook her shoulder lightly. “Aris you’ve gotta see this.”

Aris groaned and scrunched her eyes, stretched, and sat up. I watched her expression turn from sleepy and unaware to alert and surprised. “Oh my word! Where in the world are we?”

“I have no clue.”

“This place is incredible…”

What was that contraption? I thought. I took another look around.

“What now? We can’t just sit here forever…” Aris said, standing up.

“Well… maybe we should find out where we are first,” I replied, “Come on; let’s walk down this street until we find someone to ask.”

We walked straight down on the one road, observing the countless black buildings, until I started to see movement on the road some ways ahead. Floating vehicles whipped down streets leaving a blur of blue glow. I don’t think we’re at home anymore… unless this is some weird governmental experiment, I thought. “Look! I see movement,” I said pointing at what appeared to be car zooming down the road.

Suddenly a voice from the shadows yelled out, “Stop where you are!”

Aris flinched, while I whipped my head around to where the sound was coming from. A shot of adrenaline poured into my system, making my senses alert. Out of instinct, I nudged Aris and put my hands in the air. She got the hint and did the same.

The man stepped out into the light where we could see him. He actually appeared to be no older than 25, which seemed young for his deep voice. He had a very handsome face, with short cut medium-brown hair and green eyes. He obviously kept himself very fit, because his muscular silhouette showed through the black body suit he was wearing.

The suit itself was interesting as well. It was a full body suit, covering everything except for the man’s face. It had a turtle neck and the whole thing was accompanied by gloves and boots. The main body of the suit was black, but it was offset by dark grey sections and it had lines of glowing blue, almost exactly like the glowing lines of the road. This light looked like it connected to a belt the man wore around his waist, which held a small pouch and a weapon carrier.

I tried hard not to stare, but the man’s attire was too interesting. His expression looked a bit cold, disconnected. I wondered if he was good or bad; he could be out to kill us. I hoped he was the first option.
