"I can't believe you're leaving tomorrow," I said to my boyfriend Denver Rowley.
"I know, I can't either. But you'll be fine. I promise," he said.
"Maybe... But will you?"
Denver was leaving for Iraq the next day to fulfill his dream of becoming a soldier in the US army. I was extremely nervous, since he would be out on the front lines. You never know what could happen down there! But he promised me that he would be safe. I always told him, "Don't make promises you can't keep." I was more than worried-I was terrified. But this was something that was important to Denver. I couldn't hold him back.
"I'll be fine, Skylinn. Don't worry." There were those words again. If only I could believe them.
We were sitting on the couch in my parents' house, where I still lived even though I was eighteen. I'd decided to take a year off from college, so I could still have some time with my family.
I looked into Denver's hazel eyes and went to ruffle his wavy brown hair. Then I realized it wasn't there anymore. He'd had to get his head shaved for boot camp. I tried not to be too sad, but it was hard. That had been our thing-ruffling each other's hair. Now we couldn't even do something as simple as that.
He must've noticed my sad expression, because he said, "Hey, don't cry. I'm still here, Sky."
"I know you are," I said, my voice a little strained. "I'm just...gonna miss you, is all."
"I'll miss you too. Every day." He leaned in and kissed my forehead. "But we can still be in contact somewhat. I won't have my phone a lot, but we can write. I'll write to you."
"Promise?"
"Promise."
