A few weeks later, I got my first letter from Denver.
I hadn't been expecting it, which made it all the more exciting. I was checking the mail like I usually did after work, and amongst the bills and junk mail, there was one envelope that stood out.
It was long and white, a little smudged. And on the back, in Denver's handwriting, read my name and address.
I squealed like a little schoolgirl and ran into the house. "Mom!" I exclaimed.
But of course, she wasn't actually home. Upon that realization, I carried the letter up to my room, taking the stairs two at a time.
Finally, I settled onto my bed to read Denver's first letter.
Dear Skylinn,
Hi. I guess I should say that, right? It's been awhile since we've spoken even that simple of a word.
I miss you a lot. But this boot camp thing is really fun. I've learned a lot, and I'm already starting to make friends with some of the guys in my squad. One of them is engaged, and he constantly talks about his girlfriend. She reminds me of you, even though I've never met her.
I'm sorry I couldn't be there for Thanksgiving. There wasn't much to be thankful for this time around, seeing that I'm away from you, but I did enjoy a nice turkey dinner with the guys.
I bet you had fun Black Friday shopping. I got you a gift, but you probably won't get it until after Christmas. I hope you have a great holiday. I'll miss you!
Yours forever and ever,
DenverI set it down in my lap, thinking over everything. Then I picked it back up and read it again. My heart swelled and I realized for the first time since last week how much I truly missed him.
Christmas was going to be so different without him. I wanted him to be here, more than anything.
I decided it was only fair to get him a gift, since he was getting me one. And I would write him back. He would like that.
Sighing, I folded up the letter and put it back in its envelope. Then I tucked it into my dresser for safe-keeping. I couldn't wait to tell my mom the good news.
She and I had always been pretty close. We shared everything, from secrets to shoes. I was really lucky to have her as my mom.
The house felt very quiet all of a sudden. It dawned on me that I wanted a dog, or possibly a cat, something to keep me company when I was home alone.
But I knew pets were hard work. Who would take care of it while I was at the daycare? And besides, most pets were expensive.
The thought disappeared as quickly as it had come.
