Zane stalked a group of young college students as they walked down the busy sidewalk. He wove in and around people several paces behind them, watching, waiting. There was one couple holding hands. The woman was wearing a classy little black dress and her mate a nice shirt and tie. The rest of the 5 people in the group were also dressed well.Zane picked up a scent from them that was astounding, so he pursued it, the hem of his long coat trailing up in the breeze as he walked and his chin length hair following suit.
Zane had first spotted the group when they had exited the jazz bar.As they came through the door the relaxing music of horns wafted out into the sidewalk, piquing the curiosity of others walking by.Zane wasn’t in the mood for the college scene tonight and he felt more like hunting a group of people than just one individual.A group was so much harder to manage on his own, they could all go off running in different directions searching for help, but that is what made this kind of a hunt so challenging.Being able to kill each and every group member without anyone else outside of the group knowing that there was anything amiss until they were all dead…
The group was chatting and laughing as they headed down a side street, probably to where they parked their cars, Zane figured. The side street was a lot quieter and only a few other people were milling around on the front stoops of regular, trashy bars.Eventually they found their way into a large, dark, nearly empty lot.
The first to reach their vehicle was the couple that had been holding hands. As the man was opening his car, Zane appeared out of the shadows and approached them.“A fine night, isn’t it?”
The man turned at the sound of Zane’s voice. When the girl looked up and saw him, a look of nervousness took over her face.
“Yes, it is.” The man’s voice was tainted with skepticism. “Is there anything I can do for you, sir?” He was trying to be nice, Zane could tell. But it was out of fear instead of concern and that made Zane kind of angry.
“Actually, there is.” Zane pointed to the girl, who tried her car door, only to find it locked. She yanked up on the handle a few times and looked at her boyfriend with great irritation.“Open the door, now!” Her voice was an angry whisper. The man fumbled with the keys, trying to find the button that opened the doors. Zane neared the car as he spoke once again. “I would like to - borrow - your girl.”
“Are you nuts?Mister, don’t try anything.I am a black belt in karate.” The man took a weak stance of self defense, dropping his keys as he did so.
“My dear boy, such trivial means of defending yourself will not work on me.I’m terribly sorry about this.”Meanwhile, the girl kept trying her door.Zane grew very irritated by it.“WILL YOU STOP THAT!?”She flinched, then looked at her boyfriend, who was not paying attention to her.“Now, like I said, your girl.I need her for a moment.” He looked straight at her then. She shivered.
“Mister, please don’t.” Her voice sounded shaky and unsure. “You don’t need to do this.”
“Unfortunately, I do.You see, I am quite hungry.Since hunger can only be satisfied by a need, I think that changes things a bit.”The man and the girl exchanged nervous glances. While they did, Zane vanished only to reappear behind the girl.He instantly wrapped his arm around her, restraining her up against him.She shrieked. The man turned to run around the car but was stopped suddenly when Zane bared his fangs. The girl only saw her boyfriend’s fright and heard the characteristic hiss that can only be associated with hungry or angry vampires – or if you did not believe in them… crocodiles.
“Angie, don’t move!” The man poised himself to attack.Zane laughed at him.
“Silly fool. You can’t hurt me.And I guarantee that if you try, you will only hurt yourself, and I will in turn hurt your girlfriend.”
