It had been several weeks since Zane had brought Madeleine and Hannah up to the castle.Bree, of course, had visited them several times - with Zane’s permission. She couldn’t believe how he was protecting them so fiercely, as if they were people he loved. It made no sense to her.Fawn was allowed into their wing to clean, and she was to cook meals for them as well.Poor Fawn was beginning to become overworked and was slacking in her duties.
One day, she was cleaning and she dropped a gold figurine, it fell onto a vase and shattered, cracking the vase as well. She froze, then looked around in case anyone saw her.Should she hide her error?Would Zane even notice? She wasn’t too worried about Bree, but Zane, even though he probably owned millions of such figurines, he could very well notice.
Hannah peered in and saw Fawn hiding the last of the pieces of the ruined figurine in her apron pockets. The vase she had wrapped in her skirt. “What did you do?” The little girl looked at Fawn with wide eyes.
“Little girl!Don’t you know it isn’t nice to spy?” Fawn snapped. It was unlike her to snap like this. She was just so tired. She didn’t get a lot of time to sleep and had virtually no time to do anything for herself. “Go away, and don’t tell anyone. It would mean that you are a tattle tail.”
“What is a tattle tail?” The girl’s big eyes were innocently looking at Fawn.
“Oh, forget it!” Fawn rolled her eyes and turned away. “Just don’t tell anyone what you saw.” She spoke over her shoulder as she scampered out of the room quickly.
When she rounded the corner, she smacked right into Bree, dropping everything that she was trying to hide.A piece of the glass vase cut Bree’s arm and she jumped back with a shriek. She put her hand on her forearm and blood started to seep through her fingers. When she looked at Fawn, she was surprised.“What happened? Why are you running with broken glass?”
“Its nothing.Really, just a glass fell is all.” Fawn wanted more than anything to get rid of the evidence and get back to work as if nothing were amiss. But, that little girl had seen her, and now Bree was cut and bleeding. “Please, let me throw this away and I will come to help you! Please?” Fawn started to back away but Bree smiled then.
“Its ok, Fawn. Go and get rid of that dangerous broken glass.I can take care of my arm myself.” Fawn took off down the corridor and rounded a corner into a room that Bree couldn’t tell which one it was. When she got into her bathroom, she wrapped the glass in toilet paper and put it in the waste basket. She then heaved a sigh and sat on the toilet seat.In her mind she cursed that little brat Hannah. It wasn’t fair! She had to work twice as hard now without any extra help to take care of these two slaves! She had been working for Bree and Zane for so long now, so many years, and what did she ever get for it?And this woman and that girl, they got treated like royal vampires and they had just gotten here!
Fawn left the little room and went to find Bree. She found her in the first bathroom washing the cut.Fawn saw her face in the mirror, Bree was cringing.Fawn rushed to her. “Oh no, there is blood on your dress!” And indeed there was. Bree was wearing a white dress, of all things.“I’m so sorry!”
“Don’t worry about it.I’ll be fine.” But Bree was not fine.Blood continued to pour out of the ugly gash on her arm.
Once Bree was done running water on the injury, Fawn rushed to her and wrapped a towel around the arm that was cut.“What happened back there? You broke a glass, but why run?It happens all the time, people drop stuff.”
“Please don’t tell Zane.” Fawn began to cry. “He’ll eat me!”
“What?” Bree looked at Fawn, her brow furrowed. “What really happened? Please, you can tell me the truth.”
