Chapter 23: Amanda's POV

I shook my head no. It was hard to do, but I really didn't see myself going back. "Not for a while at least." I told him honestly.

"I see..well, I guess enjoy the show." He told me shortly and I decided to just walk away. I only came to see him, my shift at the hospital would start soon.

"Maybe I'll see you after my shift?" I asked hopefully.

"Maybe." He shrugged.

Outside, the heat hit me like a thousand pound weight and my heart felt like someone had grabbed a hold of it and ripped it out of my chest. Sighing, I turned the key of my little hyundai and blared my music immediately.

The ride to the hospital was a lonely one. I wanted to break down and cry but I knew I had to hold it in. "Hello?" I said into my phone once I parked. "Yes, sir, I'm right outside...uh-huh...okay, I'm coming in now Doc."

I walked into the hospital to find the ER a complete mess. There were files laid out all over the desks, the computers weren't on, and to top it all off nobody knew who was drawing blood and who was checking on patients. Sighing, I called everyone over.

Within fifteen minutes I had everyone in order. "Hey, doc, which pediatric kids need blood work?" Once I got the rooms I hurried to get things done. When I looked at the clock, I noticed that there was only two hours of my shift and I was finally getting a break.

"Fahr!"

"Yes, Doctor Shepard?"

"Weren't you just here eight hours ago?"

"Yes, ma'am. I've been pulling doubles."

"Go home, Amanda. Besides, there's someone asking for you."

"Umm..sure. Thanks." I said and quickly clocked out. I saw the entire band out in the waiting room.

"I hear there's a great dinner around here. You're gonna come with." Drayven said quickly.

"I don't know..." I said nervously, staring at Ashes.

"No, come. You two need to talk because mopy over here is a total downer."

I sighed before nodding. "Fine, but I do need to get home before late.."

"Why don't you stay with us? I mean...the girls have their own rooms tonight." Ashes said quietly. For a moment the softness of his beautiful accent froze me to the core. I just wanted him again but I couldn't.

I nodded slowly and walked outside with them. I allowed Kayla to take my keys and followed the van to Denny's; the fifteen minute drive was long and quiet with nothing being said. Then again, there was nothing to say except sorry for just leaving without notice.

"Hey, Mandy!" Davey called as I sat beside Ashes and watched as everyone sat beside their mates. I felt like I belonged again and as much as I wanted to stay at home, I wanted to go on the van with them. Travel, see most of the country, everything.

"You know I hate that nickname."

"I know." He said with a laugh. "But, really, I gotta ask. Why did you leave? We miss our cook."

I looked down, glad the waitress had come just in time for us to give the drink order. "Umm...can I not answer."

"Yes."

"No." Drayven and Ashes said at once.

I refused to look anywhere but Ashes' eyes. "I put you through living hell. You didn't eat or move unless someone threw you over their shoulders. If I had to, I'd go on that cliff again." I looked away for a moment. "I am always at risk at work if I get the wrong patient or in the wrong situation. I can't do that again, I would feel too awful."
