It's been a long and tiring day at work. It was 2 o'clock, and I had about 2 hours left in my shift, so Mary and I decided to take our breaks. Oh it's great to have such a close relationship with your boss.
We went over to the Starbucks and sat at our usual table, right in front of the window, so we had a clear view of PacSun.
"So... tell me, everything that happened!" Mary started.
"Well.. When I was driving home yesterday, I heard their new song, 'What It Takes' and I just.. I don't know I felt like it was meant for me, and something came over me. So I called Steven," I mumbled
"Oh, honey, please don't mumble, I can't really hear you.. and you called him? What did he say?" She proded
"Well," I started off a little more clearly, "I told him there was something I needed to tell him, and that he should come over, and he was there like 5 minutes later." I chuckled
"Well get on with it honey! What happened!" Mary was dying to find out.
"Okay fine, fine. So he came over, and I made us a couple drinks, and he said I was the best bartender he's ever met, which made me laugh, but then we said something kinda serious... uhm, Mary.. He said everything, in exact quotations, that I said to you yesterday.. About the electric rope. He called me his soul mate, and that he knew we were meant to be together." I sighed heavily
"AHHH MIA! That's amazing!" She hugged me
"Yeah I know... But I'm freaked out.. Like, what if I get too attatched and he leaves, or what if it's not what he thinks. I've never been this deeply in love before. I'm scared." I almost started to cry, but I blinked back my tears. "At first I thought that you told him everything, because he said exactly everything I was thinking.. everything I told you."
Mary grabbed her coffee, and I grabbed my tea, and we strolled back into PacSun, as our break was about to end.
"Honey, you know I'd never tell anyone, anything that you've told me in confidence. You know I'm not like that... and hey we've still got like, 5 minutes left in our break, do you still wanna talk some more?" She asked.
"Nah, I'l probably just clock back in, theres nothing else for me to do, really." I sighed as I finished my tea, threw the cup in the little trash can underneath the register, and clocked back in.
I couldn't help but stare at the counter before me with, what I guess was, appreciation; this counter, this simple register, was the place I met my soul mate.
A voice broke me out of my day dream, and I'll be honest, it wasn't one I was intent on listening too.
"Mia..?" the voice said.
I looked up to a wide eyed Kyle, my ex boyfriend.
He was holding a pair of jeans, the same ones Steven bought when we first met, and a few t-shirts.
"Oh my god, Mia, I had no idea you worked here! You look great! How have you been?" He asked, seeming very excited.
I just stared at him, trying to fight the rage that was slowly building up inside of me. I gave up, and just walked away, so I wouldn't cause a scene in front of any other customers.
"Mary, can you take this one?" I asked walking past her into the back storage room.
On my way back into the storage room, another customer asked me to grab him a pair of shoes in the back. Great, I didn't want to have to come back out here until I was sure Kyle was gone, but I came back out with the shoes anyway, well, because it's my job. As I walked out of the storage room, I walked straight into a man who was standing right in front of the door.
