Beat the Odds

Chapter 10

"Alright. I will go and challenge the first gym tomorrow. I need some time to brew up some of my homemade potions" I said.

"I've heard about those before and Albert showed them to me a few weeks ago. How do you make them?" Maris asked me.

"Sorry, but its a secret. I figured out how to make them when I was sick one day. I put some stuff together to make some soup and ended up making basically an elixir" I said. "If you want I can give you some tomorrow before I leave."

"That would be great," Maris said.

As I arrived home with some ingredients for my potions, I let Kirlia and Spinarak out so that they could get some fresh air while I started brewing.

As the potion was nearing completion with only another couple hours of brewing left, I was feeling hungry and I could see that both Kirlia and Spinarak were hungry as well.

"Hmm... So I'm guessing that you want some more fruit right? But what do you want Spinarak?"

Spinarak looked through the food I had and picked out some lettuce and a tortilla. I washed off the fruit and lettuce and gave both of them their food as I warmed up a burrito and continued to stir the potions.

"Ok. I think it's time for bed," I said as I saw a yawn from both of them.

"Spinarak, where would you like to sleep?" I asked him as he was looking around.

Spinarak then shot out a web into the top corner in my room and climbed up onto it and promptly fell asleep. I turned around to see that Kirlia had fallen asleep as well. Taking a long look at both of them, I quietly shut the door and went back to the potions.

As I finished pouring the potions into the spray bottles, I took a look at the clock. 10:15. Wow, I should get to bed.

As I laid down for bed, I started to plan out my strategy for the first gym battle with Brock. It was going to take a few hours to get there, but I needed to have a plan for how to deal with him.

What I know is that Brock has two Geodudes and an Onix. He usually saves Onix for last unless there is a powerful opponent. In order to take care of the Geodudes without bringing out Onix early, I will use Spinarak's Razor Leaf and Double Team to hopefully dodge attacks for as long as I can. Then, when Onix comes out, I will use Kirlia's water moves to take out Onix. Hopefully it will work, but you never know.

"Ahhh... That was a good night." I said waking up for my first gym battle. "Well, time to go. Ready Kirlia and Spinarak?"

With two distinctive nods, we were off to our first gym battle.

Approaching Pewter City, we practiced a little bit on a few of the wild Caterpies and Kakunas that were around in order to get warmed up.

Walking into the gym, I could smell the cold rocks around in the dark cave area. Up on a small mountain was Brock, my goal. Almost in a sprint, I was stopped by a smaller guy that was dressed up like a Boy Scout. Then I remembered. Camper Luigi. Ugh... Just gotta get past him.

"Alright let's do this." I said somewhat unenthusiastically. I just wanted to battle to Brock.

"Go Geodude!"

"Go Spinarak" Better make myself look somewhat skilled.

"Haha! You must be joking! Is that just an Illusioned Zorua? Why would you bring a bug to this gym?" Luigi asked.

"Just you watch." I said. Geez, this kid was a pain the ass.

"Spinarak! String Pull!"

Spinarak shot some web at Geodude and then pulled it closer allowing Spinarak to be within spitting distance of it.

"Now, Razor Leaf!"

The close distance allowed the power of Razor Leaf to be amplified to the point that Geodude was knocked out instantly. Now that Luigi kid would leave me alone.

"Fine you win. Go challenge Brock."

"Nice job out there! Now it's my turn." Brock said to me. "Go Geodude and Geodude! It's up to you. I know you have a second pokemon with you. You can use it or take on both Geodudes with Spinarak."

Dang. He's making me choose either losing the element of surprise or fighting a difficult battle.

"What do you think Spinarak?" I asked him.

Receiving a small nod and a glare at the Geodudes, I said, "Alright, you got this Spinarak!"

"Very well, both Geodudes, Rock Polish!"

Ugh... He's just scoping me out to see what I will do. Plus, he might be able to attack twice eventually. I have to take them both out quickly.

"Spinarak! Double Team!"

If he's scoping me out, then I'll give him something to watch.

"Now, Razor Leaf!"

From all directions around the Geodudes, leaves shot at them taking both of them nearly out.

"Both Geodudes, Rock Blast!"

Immediately, one after another of Spinarak's decoys were shot down with a barrage of rocks. Spinarak sustained a small amount of damage and was left exposed in the middle of the field again.

"Spinarak, Razor Leaf once more!"

Now they were both gone. All that was left was...

"Go Onix!"

Spinarak almost ran away at the sight of the beastly figure in front of him.

With the enormous rock serpent that towered above us, it was hard not to run out of the gym at that moment.

Without any prior notice, Spinarak began to glow in a strange way. I'm not saying he was evolving. No, I've seen Albert's Oshawott evolve into a Dewott so I know that special glow that consumes everything. This was slightly different. The glow came from Spinarak undoubtly, but was giving off a green like aura that continued to grow brighter until it was too difficult to look at. Both Brock and I and even Onix were looking at Spinarak somewhat puzzled as he was concentrating on something. As the glow became too much to bear, everyone looked away and heard a beam being shot from the overwhelming brightness. As the glow began to disappear, I heard a great roar from Onix as he cried out in pain and toppled onto the floor. Right away, it was clear what had just happened.

Spinarak just used Solarbeam.

And we won the battle.

A little unorthodox for a gym battle, but it was fun to write. I hope you guys enjoyed it.
