GRACELYN'S POV
"Alright, Jeremy, everything looks good. Ready to go home?" My eyes fluttered open as Jeremy responded with a simple yes to the nurse.
I took in my surroundings as the nurse made her way over to my bed to check on me. I was in my own bed and my hospital robe was replaced with my regular clothes.
"Um, excuse me?" I asked the nurse, sitting up while she prodded the area on my arm where the needle once stuck out.
"Yes?"
"Uh, I was just wondering how I got changed? And into my own bed?"
She smiled sweetly, wrapping my arm to test the pressure. "Well, when I came in to make sure you and Jeremy were ready to go home, you were in his bed," My face flushed but she didn't seem to notice. "So when I woke him up he put you in your bed."
I looked over at Jeremy, whose face was also a deep crimson color.
"And the clothes?" I turned my attention back to the nurse who was writing on a metal clipboard.
"Oh, your mom came in."
"My mom's here?" She went on a business trip right after I donated my blood and I wasn't expecting her back so soon.
"Yeah, I think she's in the food court." She flipped the metal cover over the clipboard and turned her attention to both me and Jeremy.
"Everything looks perfect. Gracelyn, your mom already signed a release form and Jeremy, your mother came earlier before work to sign the form. Gracelyn's mom will take you home." She clapped her hands together as Jeremy and I started out the door.
"Oh, and Jeremy?"
We both turned back to the nurse.
"Yeah?"
"No more punching mirrors."
JEREMY'S POV
"No more punching mirrors." the nurse joked but I sensed she was being serious at the same time.
"Oh. Yeah. OK." I laughed awkwardly.
Gracelyn and I walked in silence down the long hallway. I could tell something was still bothering her about last night. Probably the break up.
'No duh, the break up. How stupid can you be, Jeremy?'
At least she's not crying anymore. I looked over at her discretely. Her eyebrows crinkled in the middle like she was thinking hard, eyes staring down at her feet, and lips pulled in between her teeth. She noticed I was watching her and looked up, smiling a little before looking down again. I gave her a reassuring smile back as we approached the elevator. The awkward silence continued as we waited for the elevator.
I finally spoke up, "How you holdin up?"
She looked up at me and a confused look took over the thinking look. "Hmm?"
"I mean with the uh, you know..." I didn't want to make her sad again by saying it out loud.
"You know, Jeremy, you can say it out loud. I'm not gonna break down in tears." She said slightly annoyed.
"I just thought maybe, y-you were gonna be a little fragile." I stuttered.
"Well, I'm not." She snapped.
"Ok! No need to get sassy." I smirked.
"Oh, shut up." She mumbled.
"So, how are you with the whole break up thing?"
"Honestly?"
"Honestly."
She pondered a moment. "To be honest, he was a big, mean, jerk. I'm not sad anymore. I'm just mad. I mean, what kind of person uses another girl to make his girlfriend jealous? Like, are you serious? How low can you stoop?" She sighed exasperated as the elevator dinged open. I waited for her to continue and I noticed some hesitation in her eyes.
"But..." I pressed.
"But.... I guess, what we had was kind of special to me. It was my first real relationship and he was my first real crush. So, yeah, I am still upset." She concluded.
Well that's not what I wanted to hear. "Chocolate always helps me feel better."
She turned to me with a smirk on her face. "You are such a girl."
"Hey! Everyone loves chocolate!" I laughed.
"Unless you're allergic." She grinned.
"Oh, don't ruin my moment." She laughed.
"Ok, ok. You can have this moment."
"Thank you." We stayed quiet again as the elevator doors opened.
GRACELYN'S POV
"Hey, is something else bothering you? I mean, besides Brady." Jeremy asked as we walked down the corridor to the food court. A million things raced through my mind. Our friendship, when Jeremy sang me to sleep, the kiss. I wanted to tell him so bad how I felt. But would that ruin our friendship?
Maybe it's time to take a risk. "Jeremy, I have something to tell you." I looked down at my feet.
He didn't say anything so I assumed he nodded.
"I, um, I-"
"There you both are! I was just about to go up and look for you!" My mother interrupted me as we rounded a corner. I looked up to see her holding two cups of coffee that were for us.
"Oh, thanks." I said kind of disappointed that I didn't get to tell him.
We walked out of the main doors of the hospital after checking out, my mother blabbing about how my cousins are going on vacation in Florida without us.
I sighed. Obviously, the universe didn't want Jeremy and I together.
As we rode home, Jeremy and I said nothing. We just listened to my mom ramble on about random things. I would look over at him every once in a while but looked away before he noticed. He looked deep in thought. I wonder what about.
The car finally came to a stop and Jeremy said goodbye to my mother and walked over to me. He pulled me into a hug. At the last second before he pulled away, he whispered, "I have something to ask you."
And with that, he bolted off across the street and into his home.
