The Lost Gems

Chapter 4

March 4th, 1034
12:30 a.m

"Tanz! Diamond! You guys scared me half to death!" I yelled at them relieved.

The door was untouched. There was no more knocking or creepy cold whispers. I looked at the floor to see what I stepped in that was cold. My feet where covered with a glossy black liquid. It smelled like iron and blood. I quickly ran to the cupboard and grabbed an empty canning jar. I took of the lid and scooped up the black goo with my hand that wasn't cut open . The substance soon started to itch my hand. I ran to the sink and quickly rinsed and cleaned my hand from the goo. It was sticky almost tar like. I Grabbed some gauze and wrapped my other hand not knowing what i could have cut it on.

"Guys don't touch it! My hand is itching so bad!" I yelled out to the girls.

"We weren't planning on it." Diamond stated.

"Let's just try to avoid that area of the house from now on." Tanz added.

Even though we were all shook up this gave us even more reason to leave. We had a big day ahead of us in the morning and needed to rest. I tried my best to forget the pain in my hand and the events that had us shaken up. Eventually we all dozed off with no more occurrences throughout the night.

We woke up the next morning in peace. We ate breakfast and got ready for our day. We were planning on going to town and looking for some facts on the Onyx. We were sheltered from the Onyx everyone was, All we knew was that they didn't like our kind and that we were threats to them, but that's where our knowledge ended.

I pulled my long brown hair back into a side ponytail and grabbed a backpack. Tanz and Diamond were waiting for Me outside. Tanz pulled out a map.

"Ok so if we walk a mile and a half we should make it to the town of Granite, or we could head north and go three miles up to Agate." Tanz said while pointing to the map.

"Let's go to Granite because it's closer then we can make our way up to the other towns." Diamond added.

We all agreed and headed for the town. We walked along the dirt road away from the comfort of our home. We weren't coming back to our house for a while. We wanted to change our planet Mineral for the better no matter how long or the circumstances. After a slow long walk to Granite we finally made it there by 10:30 in the morning. We've been to granite a few times since we have lived here. The one time was to look for people and the second time was to look for food. The town was empty both times we went there, you could tell that someone lived there at one point. We walked into the first building we saw. It was the library. It looked like people had to leave abruptly there were books open on tables, papers where half written, and newspapers flipped open. The library smelled like mothballs and dust. I had to cover my nose. I walked up to an open newspaper and read the date it was 1,025. Which was nine years ago and the start of attacks. I read the big bold headline it said. "Death Strikes Upon Villagers Who Aren't Gems." I got suspicious and called over Tanz and Diamond.

"Guys what does this mean? People who aren't gems?" I questioned. Even though i already knew what it meant in the back of my head. Tanz came over to look.

"Hmm they must have been raiding the villages and towns looking for us. While taking out all those who stood in their way." I said under my breath

Diamond read, "The small village of Obsidian, 5 miles east of Granite had been evacuated in 1,025 as well. Obsidian was burned and then Granite a few weeks after. The last dated newspaper was only written 5 days after the evacuation in obsidian."

"They must have cleared out every area in a short amount of time." I added

"So wait... Where was everyone taken too? Were they.... Killed?" Tanz said with a scared look.Her eyes flared a bright yellow like they always did when she got emotional.

We read the rest of the Obsidian article and figured out that the large towns had to go through lots of "tests and analysis". The people were told by the armed forces which where secretly the Onyx that they were doing a checkup to look for deadly diseases because of the abrupt burst of lead poisonings among towns.What the people didn't know was that they were looking for lost gems or the special 12. The article never said that the people were killed or left unharmed but we could tell that something bad happen to them. These towns were vacant and after 9 years still nobody lived here, they were all dead just as the Onyx had killed our families.

"We're the cause of all this.." I muttered under my breath. Tears began to spill out of my eyes. "So many innocent people are now dead because of 12 different people. Are they seriously after us because of our eye colors? There has to be more to us and the rest."

"There must be a greater reason for all of this, a reason that only the Onyx know. They can't be killing over jealously alone, there must be a good reason for them to be doing this. Maybe we are the only solution to the problem and we are the only ones to fix it." Diamond said reassuringly.

We grabbed the newspapers and called it a day. We went to the closest house and went to sleep after we ate. We had a big day ahead of us tomorrow.
