Diamonds POV:

I lay awake on the blanket that me and Tanz had been sharing for the past two nights. She laid motionless sleeping beside me. Tanz and I had secretly agreed to take night shifts to watch Clay. We didn't trust him not yet at least. He was very quiet throughout the day which made us even more suspicious. We spent the previous day looking for food and wood to stock the fire. Clay and Sal managed to kill a rabbit and we ate that. We mostly talked and rest because in the morning we were going to leave for the Onyx base it would take us a few days to reach it though. Hopefully Clay will lead us there safely.

My lookout shift was almost over but I decided that I wouldn't wake Tanz and that I should let her sleep. I held my knives in my hand and stared up at the sky. It was beautiful there were so many bright stars and both of our two moons were at half quarter. I imagined how pretty it would be if they were put together because one was darker than the other but still around the same size.

A cold gust of wind hit me making me shiver. I decided to sit near the almost dim fire. It wasn't enough to keep me warm. I went over to the pile of wood and threw the remaining three pieces on the flames. I needed to go find more.

Everyone was sleeping so I decided to slip away from camp and get wood after I grabbed Sals axe. I didn't want to wander to far away like Aqua did so I picked a close sapling so the fire was still in my view. It didn't pain me to kill the young tree like it would have to Aqua. We had to do what we had to do out in the woods especially with our given situation.

I swung the axe... Whack!....Whack!....Whack!

The noise echoed throughout all the trees. I didn't know it was going to create so much noise.

I looked back at Aqua, Sal, Tanz, and Clay. Everyone was sound asleep except for Clay. He was stretching his arms and yawning. He sat up.

I held the axe in my one hand and gripped the knives in my back pocket with the other. He didn't look dangerous but you can never know. He is a mutant.

He rubbed his eyes and looked around. I watched as he grew confused when he didn't see me. His dirty blonde hair glowed in the moons light and his perfect jaw line was very attractive. Maybe he wasn't so bad. Maybe we just need to get to know him more. I stopped my thoughts, and realized I needed to get my head strait and not fall for some boy especially a mutant boy.

I gave the small trunk one last chop and watched it fall the opposite direction causing a loud thud. I ignored Clays gasp in the background and quickly chopped off a few little branches and hauled them back to the fire.

As soon as Clay saw me coming back he was relieved that I was the one causing the noise and not other mutants. He offered me help and we threw the sticks in a neat pile five feet away from the fire. I was exhausted.

"Why are you up so late?...Desmond?" He questioned.

"It's Diamond." I said with a laugh that sounded more flirtatious than it meant to be." And I'm not sure just couldn't sleep." I lied. "The fire was getting low so I decided to get more wood. Sorry for waking you up."

"Don't worry about it. Try to get some rest. You'll need it for the walk tomorrow." Clay assured with a smile.

Clay laid back down and immediately fell asleep. I was all alone again. Tanz was sound asleep and so were Aqua and Sal who were peacefully cuddled under a blanket. I threw the remaining tree branches into the fire. Laid down next to Tanz and fell asleep.

.........................................................................................

"Diamond! Wake up!" Tanz angrily shouted as she shook me awake.

"You fell asleep and didn't keep watch!" Tanz aggressively whispered into my ear so Clay wouldn't hear. Her eyes were a fiery yellow. I knew she was only protecting us from danger but I honestly saw no danger in Clay, nothing bad happened since night and everyone was fine.

"He's not bad though Tanz! He is going to help us and after I fell asleep nothing bad happened! We are all still alive and well aren't we?"

"You can never be sure though... All I'm saying is be careful and don't fully trust him. I will warn Aqua and Sal too." Tanz assured, her eyes had now turned back to the original hazel green, she was much calmer.

"If anything bad happens you can say I told you so. But until then just try to relax and not worry we have much bigger problems ahead of us." I said as I got up to hug her.

It was around eight in the morning, the sun was up and Aqua and Sal weren't near the fire. Clay was sitting near a rock and was digging through his bag while Tanz walked around swatting imaginary flies but was really just keeping an eye on Clay. I gave her a chill out look and made my way towards Clay.

I sat down next to him and put my long strait blonde hair into a ponytail. He never looked up once. I gave him a nudge on the shoulder.

"Hey is everything okay?" I asked genuinely concerned. He looked into my eyes and I had realized that he was lightly crying.

"Yea sorry I don't want you seeing me like this, I'm just still upset about Rod dying, he was like my brother."

"I know, I barely know you. But trust me we all know how it feels like to lose family. All of our family's had been killed and we can't ever get them back. As long as you keep them in your heart it is like they had never left." I said with Empathy, we all knew his pain, we all went through it. "Your strong it's okay to be hurt but don't let it get the best of you."

Without thinking I wrapped my arms around his shoulders and gave him a hug. Nobody should ever have to go through that and he needed someone to lean on. He cried into my shoulder but I didn't mind. Around two minutes later he had calmed down and let go of me. I cupped his cheek with my hand and told him that I was there for him.

He wiped his eyes and looked into mine... And gave me a smile that was more than just friendly.
