Chapter 1
2007
The day with the girls was going ahead, what would go possibly wrong? Dad might take me home because he doesn't trust me. Nothing would spoil it!Hi my name is Clara and most of everything in my life has been particularly easy to cope with. I have a loving, caring family and I have two amazing friends. We do everything friends do! Now approaching the age of sixteen, things are beginning to change. For the better? I don't actually know. It all started when my Dad and step mum wanted to move house as it was thought to be a fresh start for us all.
Our family home that meant to all in the middle of Classbury forest was going to be sold to a strange couple. So many memories, slipping through our fingers by moving to the city. This house has seen me through my childhood and now a teenager moving on because we need some more space. Just standing here outside the front door staring into space thinking of all the times I have walked through that front door.
'Come on love the new house will be much bigger than this one and it is closer to your school. No more catching the seven o' clock bus in anymore.' Marina my step mum said with a big grin on her face. The new house is the first house Dad and Marina have brought together as a married couple. I am now fifteen and I am going to be taking my GCSE's in early May. I cannot afford to have any more stress as I already do.
'That's the last box, phew finally!' Dad said in excitement as he loaded the last box into the back of the Land Rover. I said nothing and continued to stare. I could hear Dad's footsteps coming towards me on the gravel. He put his arm on my left shoulder. I looked up at him and he smiled down to me. ' I know it a big change but you will love this one. It will bring us together as a family.' Dad said softly but, I wasn't having any of it.
"Do you remember the times you used trees as barriers, so you could see both Leo and me playing outside and could keep an eye on us?' I asked Dad. Leo is my brother, two years difference in age. He has looked out for me for years and here he has lived here all of his life too. It's strange going through this move together as I know he would be moving out into the big wide world when he eventually goes to uni in a few short months if he makes the grades.
Dad replied 'of course I do. But you are both growing into strong, fine, young adults. This is where the happy memories took place as I am guessing the childhood I provided for you was a happy one? Without your mum it has been incredibly difficult to make ends meet, let alone bring you two up. Life is full of experiences and changes which we need to embrace as we get older. This is hard for all of us as this house and forest has been ours for almost twenty years and its time we moved on. Don't you agree?' He held me close and put his arms around me. I nodded slowly.
Leo came towards us with his head bowed and his hood up on his Adidas hoodie. He held the last of his cigarette to is mouth and dropped it to the floor. Dad looked at him scrawling.
'What do you think your doing? What would the new home owners think if they saw that on the floor?' Dad bent to the ground and picked up the cigarette butt. Leo shrugged his shoulders.
'Do you think this is acceptable do you hmm?' Dad said while waving the cigarette butt in Leo's face. Dad put the cigarette into a black bag which contained all our rubbish. He then put the bag into the wheelie bin ready to be collected later on this afternoon.
Marina stuck her head out the car and shouted 'Are you all going to be standing there all day being nostalgic or are we going to do something today?' We all turned quickly as her booming voice startled us. She paused to wait for snarky comment from one of us.
Then we heard a loud rumble coming from behind us: the three of us turned around. There was a small red car followed by a huge white van. They're driving on the road winding through the pine trees. 'Shoot! It's the couple who going to be living here. They are a day early! Quickly we need to go!' Shouted Dad sounding rather panicked. He dashed to the car and started the engine. Both Leo and myself ran behind him and jumped into the back. Then we were off speeding through the forest.
I looked behind through a small space in the boot where I saw our house getting smaller and smaller. I saw little black marks unloading the boxes from the white van. The figures that came out the red car were stood where I was just standing staring at the front door.
