I drove back around the block a couple of times until I pulled into the driveway, where there was only one other car sitting on the side of the driveway.
"Nika?" I looked at her as she gave a shaky sigh.
"Ok....lets do this," She said as I turned off the car and got out with her. She was shaking, I could see it in her hands.
"Baby...we can always come back later,"
"No...No. It's fine, I can handle it a little bit," She said as she rang the door bell and waited. I gripped her hand and kissed her cheek to help calm her down. The door opened and a tall man, with a slightly darker tone than Nicki's stood there with a wide smile on his face.
"Onika," He pulled her into a hug and she relaxed a bit and returned the hug lovingly to him without hesitation.
"I missed you,"
"I missed you too Jelani," She smiled. He looked at me and held out his hand.
"Hi...I'm Jelani, Nicki's older brother. You must be Janet,"
"It's a pleasure to meet you," I took his hand and gave him a firm handshake.
"Ok...Sister Willia And Sister Palms are still here,"
"Oh no...."
"Yeah....they are all having coffee and pound cake,"
"Who are they?" I asked.
"Sister Willia is the only one of the sisters from church who ever accepted me, she's like my grandmother. Sister Palms on the other hand, is the worst of them all, and with her here, the whole town is going to know I'm back with girlfriend by tonight," She shook her head.
"Don't worry Nika, we'll try to keep motor-mouth under control," He giggled a bit.
"Don't be rude Jelani," Said a female voice coming from the inside. Jelani stepped aside and I saw a woman with jet black hair, standing with an apron around her with dress pants and a button up shirt on.
"Don't speak so rudely of her when she's still here," She said As she hugged Nicki tightly.
"I missed you baby girl,"
"I missed you too mommy," Nicki said.
"Are you sure you want to come in baby girl?"
"Yeah...I'll be ok mommy," Nicki said as she entered the house and there stood an older woman in a nice pink suit and hat standing there with a rather disgusted look on her face. The other , in a black suit, gave a smile at us.
"Well....I thought we told you not to come back until you learned that a woman belongs to a man and not a woman,"
"Sister Palms," Sister Willia warned.
"No...Now look here you! Go on back to where you were from and take that skank with you,"
"Hey now stop it... for one, she is not a skank. She is a decorated Detective of LAPD and saved Nicki's life," Defended Nicki's Mother.
"I do not care....we aren't having no gays in this congregation or this town!" She shouted, grabbing her back, an forcefully pushing past Nicki, who was only crying her eyes out. She looked down and ran away, into the bathroom, slamming and locking the door.
"Nicki!" I ran after her, knocking on the door when I reached it.
"Nika? Baby open the door,"
"No! Just leave me alone!" she shouted. I hated hearing her crying so hard, it broke me apart.
