Nicki and I sat in the station as we waited for the Sheriff to come out. I was still ready to get my hands on that kid's neck for pulling a stunt like that. Nicki leaned on my shoulder as she was watching everyone in the room carefully, trying to see if anyone had judgmental eyes on her.

"Where is he?! Tell me where he is!!" we looked up to see the same lady, Sister Palms, rushing past the officer at the front desk, and straight back, stomping her way in. She looked on, turning her head towards us. At Nicki mainly, and I could see her face turning red and her eyes going black.

"So...the demon child strikes again,"

"You should be saying that about your grandson Ms. Palms," I growled. Nicki inched her way behind me, not wanting anymore scolding.

"How dare you...my son is not of your kind,"

"My kind...my kind?! I am a got damn human being the same as you! I can sit in the same seat you do, and do anything You can! I have the same body parts as you, but at least my tits don't sag!" She gasped at my remark and smirked.

"Janet please. You're only making things worse," Nicki said, pulling at my hand.

"No Nicki....I know you don't want to be mean, but you have got to stick up for yourself! You let these ignorant people walk all over you! Enough is enough already!" I turned my attention back to the old, grey-haired woman standing in front of me.

"You are not some high and mighty  angel sent from some mountain to come and judge people! Only God can judge Nicki, me, and anyone else on this damn planet. You do not have that right! Grow some humility and decency ! I can't stand church people like you, thinking everything everyone else is doing is so sinful when all the hate you have is just as bad! You are not higher than anyone else here. You were born in sin just like the rest of us! Get off your high horse!" I shouted. Most of the station went quiet. I was fuming and about ready to punch this lady in the throat, but that might lead me to losing my badge, and lord knows I am not going back to waitressing again. The woman stood stupefied by my words. I took a deep breathe to calm me down.

"Now look Ms. Palms. Your son, tied a cinderblock to Onika's ankle in the waterpark pool which, if I hadn't have seen her, she would have drowned and he would be put away for murder. Since she didn't, it is merely attempted murder, which will give him a few years unless the Lawyer cuts a deal and he says that he is guilty for what he did. Do you understand that?" She nodded and sat down, Nicki was still holding my hand to hold me back. The woman sat across from us, and all of us said not a word. The buzzing of the station continued and I was busy keeping Nicki comfortable, since Ms. Palms was burning holes into her head. Samson, the sheriff walked out and shook his head.

"He confessed alright. Balling like a little baby,"

"Well good. So how long?"

"Two years in the county jail and house arrest three months after he gets out," He said.

"Alright, well, do you need us for anything?"

"Nope, you all can go ahead and head home," I nodded, and grabbed Nicki by the hand and we walked out to the car and Nicki said nothing, not a word.

"Are you mad at me?" I asked her.

"No....I just never seen her shut up so fast in my life," Nicki smiled a little.

"She really is a motor mouth. So we'll have to pack tonight and be ready to leave early tomorrow morning ok? No lolly-gagging," I say, pinching her cheek. That was her first real smile I had seen in a long time.

The week after that, Janet and I were closer than ever. She even let me stay at her apartment all the time. She drove me to work and everything. It was almost the beginning of my college semester and I was preparing myself. I was studying my anatomy book and labeling all the parts of a human body. Janet slid in behind me, hugging my waist.
